Hi, we’re down to our final four but can’t decide! Anything we should consider regarding any of these:

Lucas
Marcus
Marius
Leo

Lucas is popular at the moment, lovely still but have you thought about Luca 🥰

nmhermione · 02/05/2024 21:42

I prefer unusual names, or at least names that aren’t anywhere near the current top 10. So because of that, Lucas and Leo would be a no for me, though they are very nice names.

I love Marius, it’s uncommon and beautiful, and has a nice rhythm to it and it doesn’t have an obvious nickname (all things that really matter to me personally).

Can I ask what the names of your other children are? I think that names of siblings should go together, but not be too similar, so that’d also influence my decision.

17caterpillars1mouse · 02/05/2024 22:04

I really like Lucas and Marcus. Think I prefer Marcus as its more unexpected.

Curlyblondefemale · 02/05/2024 22:05

Leo

Upinthenightagain · 02/05/2024 22:06

Leo of those

TheAceWoman · 02/05/2024 22:09

Out of those 4 I would choose Luke.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 02/05/2024 22:28

Ooh love Les Mis, so definitely a vote for Marius from me. Probably best to avoid Enjolras, much harder to pronounce.

Floralnomad · 02/05/2024 22:35

I like Marius , reminds me of the old show jumper from when I was quite small .

I have a 17 yo Lucas but pronounced Luca as he is half French so we don't pronounce the s. I was going to go for Luka so we wouldn't be saying "like Lucas but we don't pronounce the s" every single time but....my eldest also has an English/French name pronounced the French way and we/she has always had to do that too, so that makes both of them!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 03/05/2024 00:28

Lucas( Mine is 22)

I feel very similarly to you! Our other names are ridiculously outing unfortunately- one is a very Spanish longstanding family name, and the other is a Roman emperor.

Sadly I think we’ve taken Marius off the list. It’s DH’s least favourite, and we have to narrow it down somehow. So I think we’re probably left with Leo (which would be Leonidas on BC), Lucas and Marcus.

I named my son Leo 5 years ago when it wasn’t popular, and I thought it was uncommon but not odd, so perfect. Except it seems everyone having babies around the same time had the same clever logic, and it’s so over used now, everywhere I go with my kids I hear at least 2 other “Leo’s” in the vicinity. Also normally shouting “LEO! STOP IT!” (Mine included I hasten to add). There’s at least 2 Leo’s in my Sons year at primary, and I’ve heard others in the playground too. Just for context really if you want something less common.
I also named my second son an uncommon but not odd name, and then a couple of celebs used it too, and now…well…welcome to the common name club!

WrongSortOfPoster · 03/05/2024 10:11

Leo has been in the top 20 most popular names since 2012 and in the top 10 since 2017, @Ginsoakeddryjanuary .

@WrongSortOfPoster Depends on the source - when I was looking (and from a quick google search just now to make sure I wasn’t going mad, which is quite likely these days), Leo isn’t even in the top 50 on some sites.
I also think there’s something to be said for once you choose a name, you hear it all the time, probably because you’re more attuned to it

WrongSortOfPoster · 03/05/2024 10:29

@Ginsoakeddryjanuary , according to ONS. Babies called Leo in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com)
I appreciate that you might not be in England or Wales.
The 'baby name' sites are not reliable.
It's a nice name, works internationally and it will work for a boy or a man.You chose a good name.

Bloom15 · 03/05/2024 10:32

I like Lucas

What about Misha?

My cousin has the name of a Roman emperor too (August). Still, even if the names have a different heritage, they can still go well together, if they're of a similar 'type' if that makes sense! :)

Well, I've now added Marius to my list, so thanks for bringing it up! I hadn't considered it before, and now I'm really liking it, haha!

MadKittenWoman · 03/05/2024 10:51

I love Marcus.

Ginsoakeddryjanuary · 03/05/2024 11:02

@WrongSortOfPoster well yes I confess I did not go to the lengths of checking the ONS 🤣 served me right then I guess!
I agree I think it works boy to man - and can’t be shortened or lengthened which I prefer. My second sons name on the other hand, can’t be shortened as only one syllable but gets endless extensions, I rarely hear his actual name used!

WrongSortOfPoster · 03/05/2024 13:38

Of course it can be shortened - Lee. It can be lengthened too.
Names tend to be more popular in certain areas or groups, so the ONS is an informative source.
Also, if you have a child with a name, your ears will prick up when you hear of another one.

Ginsoakeddryjanuary · 03/05/2024 13:53

@WrongSortOfPoster no-one is shortening Leo to Lee 🙄🤣 not in my experience of the last 5+ years anyway! Granted we have many more to go yet, but I’m quite confident. Intrigued to hear how it can be lengthened, without the usual “ey” type extension.

Yes, as I said, you become more attuned to a name once you choose it. So you agree with me on something at least! 🤣

WrongSortOfPoster · 03/05/2024 14:01

Leonardo. He'll get Lee at some point. I know Ians who get called E. Seriously.

SaviourofSchoolUniform · 03/05/2024 16:10

Leo is a name for a cat!
