Has the 2022 data been released as yet?

Not as far as I know. The Scottish data for 2022 and 2023 has been released though.

Beachs · 26/04/2024 14:22

17th may apparently

pinkmags · 26/04/2024 16:57

You must mean the 2023 data (to be released soon)?

No the 2022 data hasn't even been released yet 😒

DemelzaRobins · 26/04/2024 18:40

I hope they don't delay the 2022 data any further than 17 May - my baby's due on 1 June!

Absolutely insane that it's taken this long. It used to come out late summer/early Autumn but for some reason it's delayed almost a year this time.

Already too late for me! My due date is the 14th 🙄 Will just have to hope our chosen names haven't soared up the charts!

toastofthetown · 26/04/2024 18:58

Still not sign of the 2022 name data and no firm release date yet. The baby names are being bundled in with the Birth Characteristics release which is apparently the reason for the delay. This is the release provisionally scheduled for May (but then it's also been provisionally scheduled for every month since February, so I wouldn't count on it).

2023 names are apparently due for release in July 2024 according to a FOI request, but isn't in the release calendar.

Birth characteristics in England and Wales: 2022 - Office for National Statistics

Annual live births in England and Wales by sex, birthweight, gestational age, ethnicity and month, maternities by place of birth and with multiple births, and stillbirths by age of parents and calendar quarter.

Absolutely insane that it's taken this long. It used to come out late summer/early Autumn but for some reason it's delayed almost a year this time.

Once upon a time it use to be released in December for that year. It's only the last 15 years or so we had to start waiting until August of the following year for the data, then September/October in more recent years. Granted it was never 100% accurate for that year when it was released around 17th-20th December each year, as babies not born or registered yet ended up tagged onto the following year's stats, but it shows it definitely use to be possible to have a quick turn around.

I didn't mind waiting until August as it meant more accurate data, as all the babies born that year were included (and only babies born that year). They also started to do greater analysis such as most popular names by area, mums age, birth month etc, which understandably took longer. However, waiting until (at least) May two calendar years later is ridiculous!

I wouldn't mind so much if they were honest but this data has been 'pending' on their release calendar since last September and just keeps getting pushed further back every month. I'll believe it is being released in May when I see it.

The data is so woefully out of date by now that it's almost not worth it. Those not in the know will just gave taken lists from Babycentre and the likes as gospel when they were released at the end of last year, assuming it's official data. 'Babies' included in the 2022 stats will be practically 18 months-2 1/2 years by the time it finally comes out! Hardly useful for finding out what is currently popular!

Update - looks like this is due to be released tomorrow.

I don’t see anything yet?

toastofthetown · 17/05/2024 07:54

The release should be at 9:30. Not that’s it’s in my calendar or anything…

Fantastic. Should be enough time to check our proposed names before the baby is born since this labour is taking forevvvverrr.

Hulanula · 17/05/2024 09:36

Has anyone found the data? I still can’t see anything

toastofthetown · 17/05/2024 09:37

Noah was the most popular boys' name in England and Wales for the second year in a row, while Olivia remained the top name for girls for the seventh year in a row.

Isabella replaced Willow in the top 10 names for girls, while Theodore, Theo and Freddie replaced Harry, Archie and Henry in the top 10 names for boys.
Muhammad was the most popular boys' name in four out of nine English regions. Olivia was the top girls' name for every English region and Wales, except London where Amelia was the most popular girls' name.

Leon, Elias, Musa, Axel and Ibrahim were new entries to the top 100 for boys in 2022. Meanwhile, Charles, Harvey, Ollie and Nathan all dropped out of the top 100.

New entries to the top 100 for girls were Ophelia, Ottilie, Eloise, Nova and Fatima, while Beatrice, Anna, Holly, Heidi and Amber all left the top 100.
Baby names of Welsh origin featured among the most popular in Wales in 2022, with Mali, Seren and Eira among the top 50 for girls and Arthur, Osian, Elis, Harri and Jac among the top 30 for boys.

  2. Amelia
  3. Isla
  4. Ava
  5. Lily
  6. Ivy
  7. Freya

  9. Isabella
  10. Mia

Commenting on today's findings, James Tucker from the Office for National Statistics said:
"Noah was the most popular name for boys in 2022, for the second year in a row, having replaced Oliver at the top in 2021. Oliver has now slipped to fourth most popular boys' name, behind Muhammad and George.

"Olivia remained the most popular girls' name in 2022, having held the top spot since 2016. In second and third place for the girls it's Amelia and Isla, both unchanged from 2021.

"Theodore, Theo and Freddie are three new entries into the top 10 boys' names in 2022. Isabella is the only new entry into the girls' top 10."

Full datasets should be in the Data tab, but I can only see 2021 at the moment.

Hulanula · 17/05/2024 09:37

Spoke too soon, it’s there now

toastofthetown · 17/05/2024 09:38

Just after I posted they appeared!

TheBirdintheCave · 17/05/2024 10:35

Woohoo our chosen names of Conrad and Marcella* are still below 50 entries so we should be all good to go :)

*There were some registered Marcies though :/

PitterPatter3 · 17/05/2024 11:28

Hurrah! I was beginning to think the day would never come. Although there’s not been a huge change since the last set.

Qwerty93 · 17/05/2024 12:31

Do they still have the feature where you can search for a name and it will tell you where it ranked? (For those outside the top 100)

QuiltedHippo · 17/05/2024 13:28

Oooh best day of the year thank you!
Just need darker green to update as that's always fun to play with

QuiltedHippo · 17/05/2024 13:42

I can't see the full list either @Qwerty93 just top 100, normally you get the whole thing. Maybe I need to try not on my phone but if anyone knows where it's hiding let us know.

From the top 100 I was expecting Jude to jump more, though 8 places is still a lot and I think the 2023 data will show it more.

toastofthetown · 17/05/2024 13:44

If you click on these links here, download the Excel dataset, the full list is on Tab 6 😊
Girls
Boys

I've also put in my Google Drive copies of the full dataset in my google drive, maybe that will work if anyone is struggling to access the ONS file
Boys - copy of ONS file - full list of names used 2022
Girls - copy of ONS file - full list of names used 2022

Hopefully people can see that, if they want to view the names outside the top hundred (until Darkgreener updates).
