How would you pronounce Leia? Running out of time to register

First time poster but would love your thoughts on how you would pronounce Leia?

We don’t have long left to register the birth and had decided on Leia long before I was pregnant, I’m now doubting it as worried that she will have a lifetime of people mis-spelling or saying her name wrong.. My intention would be Leia, pronounced as Laya.

The other option is Harper but aware this is very popular at the moment but still lovely and suits her too.

Thanks in advance

I've never seen Star Wars

Is Laya like Maya Confused

Maya like my-ah or Maya like may-ah? Wink

Surprised by posters unfamiliar with Princess Leia, Star Wars is such a massive cultural phenomenon you'd think everyone would be vaguely familiar with her.

Moier · 23/04/2024 14:16

When l first read it l said Lee-A

Notreat · 23/04/2024 14:17

Lay a. Like others have said like princess Leia.

ShelfShark · 23/04/2024 14:18

I would have no idea how to pronounce that because I’m not a Star Wars fan. I think I would guess Leah.

AuntieStella · 23/04/2024 14:18

Lay-a

I think the Star Wars pronunciation will be the vast, vast majority for a long, long time to come.

And I prefer it to Harper

Yokaiwatch · 23/04/2024 14:19

Princess Leia

I've never seen a Star Wars film so haven't heard the name pronounced.

I watched it for the first time about 2 weeks ago at the request of DC and didn’t think much of it tbh but I’d still have known who Princess Leia was as a basic pop culture reference. So many other shows reference it! Like in Friends where Rachel dresses up for Ross.

Luckycloverz · 23/04/2024 14:20

Girl in my sons class is called Leia, she gets called a mix of laya or leah - she apparently hates the Star wars reference and wants to change it to Leah spelling when she's older because she's always correcting people with spelling and pronunciation 😬

Babyboomtastic · 23/04/2024 14:20

Like the Princess

usernother · 23/04/2024 14:20

Harper's nicer and easy to spell and pronounce.

Balingodh · 23/04/2024 14:21

I know a Leia who pronounces it Lee-ah. But i think Laya is more the common pronunciation

BoohooWoohoo · 23/04/2024 14:23

Like Princess Leia so pronounced layer

SuperLois34 · 23/04/2024 14:24

I would say Lay-a. But really it's unavoidable to have a mix of being called Lay-a and Lee-a.

DuchessOfSausage · 23/04/2024 14:25

Lay-ah. I don't like Harper but it's a nice surname.

Motherofpearlxoxo · 23/04/2024 14:26

I would pronounce it Laya too…but I love Harper! I have an 8 month old and go to 3 busy baby classes a week and not come across one yet so bet it’s not that popular

Pieceofpurplesky · 23/04/2024 14:27

Lay-a the original (now Disney) Princess - although she is actually General at the end. Such a geek.

BuddingPeonies · 23/04/2024 14:28

Lee-ah

smilesonlyforyou · 23/04/2024 14:29

Lee a

Nicebloomers · 23/04/2024 14:36

Lay-a

Boxerdor · 23/04/2024 14:38

Lay- a

mathanxiety · 23/04/2024 14:45

As in Star Wars.

I think most people would be familiar with the character.

And in any case, a mispronounced name isn't the disaster it's made out to be here.

MajorMischa · 23/04/2024 14:45

Leia - definitely lay-uh
Leah - definitely lee-uh

Harper - definitely horrible. Makes me think of harpy.

frocklesswonder · 23/04/2024 14:46

Lee-ah? Really not a Star Wars fan here so no idea how it's supposed to be pronounced Confused

mathanxiety · 23/04/2024 14:46

pinkmags · 23/04/2024 14:15

I've never seen Star Wars

Is Laya like Maya Confused

I've never seen Star Wars either. But I have managed to become familiar with the name of an iconic character of 20th and 21st century cinema regardless.
