Coast for a baby boy name?

DH works at sea and we live near the beach and have always loved it!

Is it too out there? I'm imagining I'm going to get some negative opinions but thought I'd see!

The trouble with Coast is it also means coasting so I can imagine his teachers will have a field day with Coast coasting

Other than that I like names like Ocean and Coast are hard to pull off because they are such big concepts

But there worse names

NonBinaryBlanket · 21/04/2024 22:03

I like it. We have friends who called their DD Sealoa, which as a seaman your DH would understand.

That does sound like a faded aquarium in a run down resort..

ridingfreely · 22/04/2024 14:41

Coasting through life - he will get sick of those kinds of comments

I don't often say I dislike names on here but that's really not a good choice at all

WildCherryBlossom · 22/04/2024 14:42

How about Brendan - I think St Brendan is the patron Saint of Sailors.

Firsttimebabymummy · 22/04/2024 16:36

I think it would make a better middle name personally but I don't dislike it.

Daisylookslost · 23/04/2024 19:22

I think if you like it then why not? Personally I’d rather a unique name such as Coast than being one of 3 Brendans for example. As said above you owe no one an explanation any more than the next person naming their child Oliver or Olivia.
Yes coasting thru life can be a negative association perhaps, but don’t all names have negative associations if you look hard enough?
Original names over boring acceptable ones any day! [I have the latter 🙄 but DC has former and don’t regret this for a second]
go for it! 😃

I don’t think it’s ’out there’ I think it’s just a bit cringe and ‘simple’. When people say ‘ooh what an interesting name, why Coast?’ And you reply ‘his Dad works at sea and we live on the coast’ I think people will be surprised there’s not a more articulate explanation. It’s like living rurally and having a Dad that works in agriculture and saying ‘yeah we love the name Field because his Dad like works on fields and we can like see lots of fields from our house’. I can imagine Vicky Pollard saying it.

I just read that mid cough @Moveoverdarlin and don't want to sound tooooo netty, but I did nearly expire there due to my wheeze/laugh/cough at thought of VP saying that... 'his names Ailse his dad works in Gateway'..

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 26/04/2024 21:23

Oh dear... you can have a sea themed (proper!) name without it being so on-the-nose.

KateJ521 · 26/04/2024 21:51

I think some of these posts are put very harshly.

The truth is OP, that when you are pregnant and have been thinking about baby names non stop it's fairly easy to lose sense of the line between thoughtful and unique names, and slightly odd names. And you obviously appreciate that, because presumably that is why you have come on to Mumsnet to seek views.

Coast to me is a bit more on the odd side, but I like the idea and meaning. I disagree with a PP that your reasoning is too simplistic. What's the difference between the reason being you like the coast or you just randomly liking a name for no particular reason at all.

What I would do is look for another boys names with coastal/nautical type meanings or that give the beach/coast vibes.

FeatheryStroker · 26/04/2024 21:57

What's the difference between the reason being you like the coast or you just randomly liking a name for no particular reason at all.

The difference is that people do ask when the name is unusual. If you call your baby Alfie then nobody is going to ask why but if you call your baby Bookcase it's going to be mentioned.

And it's still fine to just say 'we just liked it' but people do enquire about unusual names.

Can you imagine a man in his 70s called Coast?

Yes, he'd be super cool

eileandubh · 26/04/2024 22:03

By the time Coast is 70, the new babies will all be called Stapler, 5534, and Brenda-Lisa.

atomicginge · 26/04/2024 22:17

I would say it's a super cool middle name.. but not for a first name, here's some other suggestions:

For a boy;
Harbor Coast
Fischer Coast
Murphy (means sea warrior) Coast
Sonny Coast
Wilder Coast
Hurley (means sea tide) Coast

For a girl;
Waverly Coast
Marina Coast
Coral Coast
Isla Coast

KateJ521 · 26/04/2024 22:19

Wilder and Murphy are cool!

Also - Kai (meaning sea), Morgan (born of the sea), Dylan (son of the sea).

KateJ521 · 26/04/2024 22:20

You could give a name based on where you live/a specific area of coast.

JussathoB · 26/04/2024 22:43

Bay
sandy
skipper
fisher
kai
ocean
wave
cliff
marinus
caspian
adrian
titan
you could potentially use the more unusual name as a middle name or nickname

Angrymum22 · 26/04/2024 22:43

Being the DM of a teenage DS I would say that his future nickname is likely to be Mat or coat or even cosy. They do like to add a y to the end of names.
Coast-Coaster- beer mat.
Coast-coasty -cosy.

The names they conjure up are bizarre but all quite logical when you ask for an explanation.
DS’s best friend is known as Kitkat because his surname is the same as another famous chocolate bar.
Most nicknames have a vague association with their given name.

I have a friend who is known as Eric, the reason, someone thought his signature looked like Eric. He is a doctor though. Very few people know his given name as a result. In fact his full nickname is Eric the Viking, he is now 50+ but still answers to this name.

Coast is really a bit uncomfortable to call someone since it is so not a proper noun, so they will find one they feel more comfortable using.

OurPebble · 26/04/2024 22:54

Shingle Spit Surname

Sorry, maybe not...

No, I think if you're set on Coast as a middle name, doubling down on a sea-faring first name will only make the poor child sound like an all-inclusive beach resort.

OurPebble · 26/04/2024 23:08

What about Caspian, as it's the name of a sea?

Sandwichgen · 26/04/2024 23:12

Reef

Interesting to see the meaning of those names .

I like Ocean. Not keen on Coast.
