Jacob or Dylan for a boy?

Brother to Noah.
Was set on Jacob, but love the meaning of Dylan "son of the sea".
Jacob 'family name' or Dylan Jacob (as don't want to completely met Jacob go).
Much thanks

Jacob as a given name.

Jake is too nicknamey.

Redburnett · 13/04/2024 19:32

Both lovely names. Don't worry too much about comparison with MP, with luck he will be long gone from headlines when your DS grows up. For me Dylan has positive associations with Dylan Thomas and Bob Dylan - but I am old so that shouldn't worry you!

KnickerlessParsons · 13/04/2024 22:45

Are you going to pronounce Dylan the correct way (Dullan) or the incorrect, English way (Dillan)?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/04/2024 22:53

While I still prefer Dylan, between Jake and Jacob, definitely use Jacob @PrincessTitan . You’ve given DS1 a full name ( Noah), it would be a bit unfair not to do the same for DS2 imo. Jake belongs more with Zack or Ben etc in a sibset to me (ie. other shortened name styles).

He will likely stay as Jacob when young unless you decide to introduce him to other people as Jake. It’s just as teens that the majority of boys seem to become the obvious shortening (Jake, Will, Ed, Tom etc) to their friends in my experience. It’s only a mistake to use a longer version if you hate the sound of the most common shortening too as parents can’t stop this once they’re older.

Son's middle name is Jacob. I liked Dylan as well but it was off limits as my mums last dog was called Dylan - and he was a nightmare dog so the name had a 'history'!

Dylan is much less popular in my teaching experience - not a huge number of Jacob's but definitely more around.

Jacob

Jake or Joby

Dylan still reminds me of the magic roundabout programme, but it's my age!

Dylan isn't heard much (I work with children) so that's a tick.

Jacob - great name

Although I don’t mind Dylan

HoldingOnForAHeron · 14/04/2024 18:06

@TheBirdintheCave , it is generally reliable, but I wouldn't take it as gospel.

The character in the Mabinogi was called Dylan Ail Don. The Ail Don that refers to the sea. The boy had golden hair and swm like a fish.
Dylan's meaning isn't specified.

TheBirdintheCave · 15/04/2024 08:36

@HoldingOnForAHeron Fair dos, it's not perfect but I used to work for Nameberry so... in comparison it's an excellent and well researched resource 😅

ChiefEverythingOfficer · 15/04/2024 08:37

Jacob & Noah a bit too biblical for me, so I would choose Dylan, even though I prefer the name Jacob.

TM1979 · 15/04/2024 08:44

I prefer Dylan. It’s a very cool name at any age. Jacob is ok, my problem is I know 2 local ones and they are both annoying brats and it puts me off the name unfortunately.

IntermittentFarting · 15/04/2024 09:51

Ooh, tricky... both were on my boys' list for years but I had 4 consecutive girls!
I'd go for Dylan, simply because Jacob seems to have soared in popularity in the last 25 years or so.
Both great names.

HoldingOnForAHeron · 15/04/2024 10:29

@TheBirdintheCave , does Nameberry make up the meanings?
@TM1979 , I don't think it's cool and I think of brats too. I think it's in the same league as Marley, Ziggy and Bowie.

TheBirdintheCave · 15/04/2024 10:35

@HoldingOnForAHeron They don't make them up per se. I just found them to be poorly researched. They're also very lose and free with the names they choose to add there, often assigning meanings to modern invented names (that don't have an etymology) which is something I don't agree with.

Never ever EVER name a child Joby unless they are prepared to avoid Scotland and Scottish people all their life!

Fun fact - Bob Dylan’s son is called Jakob Dylan.

😁😁

HanaJane · 15/04/2024 11:43

Depends how you're pronouncing Dylan (the Welsh way like Dull-ann or English like Dillon), I'm Welsh so Welsh Dylan I like haha
Otherwise I prefer Jacob

AIstolemylunch · 15/04/2024 11:53

I really like both Jacob, Dylan and Jake! Dylan is a great name, I'm biased as have one, he's at uni so not challenging to teach at all 😁, other son also has a friend called Dylan, also similarly studious. Just be warned that Jacob will get called Jake, J, Jakey, Jakey boy or something random beginning with J and Dylan will get called Dyl, Dips, Dippo, something random, etc and you will have no control over this! Teenage boys shorten and nickname everything/one!

HoldingOnForAHeron · 15/04/2024 11:55

@HanaJane , Welsh Dylan is in his 50s or 60s and the name is fine.
Dylan (Dillun) is awful.
