How much do initials matter?

Our surname begins with an I, so we have to be careful with what initials we are using (avoiding STI, UTI etc).

Due to this I have become pretty obsessed with how initials look/flow. My DH says I overthink it, and that as long as we’re happy with the name the initials don’t matter. Currently one of my favourite names leaves the initials JITI, I know this doesn’t spell anything but it doesn’t look very nice to me (maybe I’m being ridiculous 🤣)

What are everyone’s thoughts, do initials matter that much?

Yes I’m afraid you’re being a tad ridiculous. As long as it doesn’t spell something bad like UTI, it’s totally fine.
edited to add - JITI is completely fine.

Initials never matter - Britney Spears had BS as initials, yet nobody ever mentions it.
When it comes to bullying, bullies bully due to their insecurities and you can't really bully proof kids. It doesn't work like that.

so, just use names you love.

mynamechangemyrules · 06/04/2024 11:15

My ExFIL made us change the order of our PFB's names as he was worried about the way the initials spelt something similar to a swear word (but you'd have to see the whole lot written AND THEN jump from the actual initials to the adjacent possible swear word...) and I still hate him for it 😂

PressureLikeATickTickTick · 06/04/2024 11:17

My sons initials are ARS.

Somethings we call him his full name with Esquire on the end when he's he's being a real A.R.S.E 😂

Danikm151 · 06/04/2024 11:17

If we didn’t double barrel surnames my son’s initials would have been ARM 😂

in the workplace initials can matter sometimes so avoid shit, fuck, cok etc otherwise it’s fine

KirstenBlest · 06/04/2024 11:26

I don't have a middle name so my initials are KB. I'm usually KB2 because there will be someone else with the same initials.

Think of famous people who are known by their initials (J. R, R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, W.B. Yeats, A.S. Byatt, J.R. Ewing etc) . Some combinations look better than others.

wite · 06/04/2024 11:34

Depends. At my DCs school the PE kit etc has their initials on it so thinks like STD or ARS wouldn't be great.

ggggggooooo · 06/04/2024 11:46

Do you honestly think 'I' is a particularly bad initial? You are being weird

Moreteaandchocolate · 06/04/2024 11:49

JITI is great! Nothing wrong with that at all! I personally avoided anything too obviously like a word / rude word, but other than that it doesn’t matter, imo.

Surely you can leave out a middle initial and just leave it at SD, or AS? It wouldn't occur to me to add dc's middle initial to their sports kits.

KirstenBlest · 06/04/2024 12:08

I don't think JITI is great. When I was at school, if your initials made a pronounceable sound (e.g. BOJ or YAC) that would be your nn.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 06/04/2024 12:09

I have a friend who's initials are STD. For as long as I've known him, his nickname has been Clap.

I love this!

I think JITI is fine as long as you're happy with the nickname Jiti.

mikado1 · 06/04/2024 12:12

I would never consider my middle names in my initials. Mine are just first and surname.

QueSyrahSyrah · 06/04/2024 12:14

You're overthinking it OP.

For a time before I got married and changed my surname my nickname and surname initials were 'BJ'.

Nobody ever made a thing of it. Not even at school.

Haveboth · 06/04/2024 12:16

My initials are RIP

Blackcats7 · 06/04/2024 12:17

I knew someone whose initials were WC. This did not work well.

Why, was the flush broken? 😆

Floralnomad · 06/04/2024 12:22

Just make sure that the initial when written in front of the surname doesn’t make a word eg W Anker .

Dontdeclutterthemagic · 06/04/2024 12:23

My colleagues have the initials AM and PM which are innocuous enough but in combination do cause some confusion.

You're overthinking it!

Catlord · 06/04/2024 12:27

Fine as long as it doesn't actually spell anything embarrassing. So, STI, UTI, WC or BUM I would avoid. JITI is fine.

Every name has the potential for the BS or ARM level of amusement. This can't be fully avoided. I have a 'classic' name often cited as a favourite on here. I was teased all the time for it! Kids are very creative.

We just write his full name, there's been enough space on every piece of school kit he's ever used.

KirstenBlest · 06/04/2024 12:42

@PressureLikeATickTickTick , we embroidered our initials on ours.

Aparecium · 06/04/2024 12:51

As this is an example of our experiences, all initials have been changed.

Our surname initials are UD, so we wouldn't name our dc Charlotte Ruby or Sebastian Thomas, for example. In Y11 Luke Thomas acquired a set of nicknames: Luds/Luddie/Ludster/M'Lud. He chose to put LUD on hood leavers' hoodie as a result.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/04/2024 22:56

It only matters if it spells or sounds like something teasable - so yes STI is a bad idea. The boring? look of JITI also doesn’t matter - you aren’t going to use/see initials all the time in the way you’d use full first name and surname. You are overthinking imo.
