Dyfan or Bryn

Just that really, we are stuck between two boys names. We are leaning to Bryn with it being easier to pronounce but don't know if that would lead to too many Gavin and Stacey jokes

Oh Dyfan is lovely. So is Bryn and I suspect the Gavin and Stacey reference won't be an issue by the time he goes to school.

foreverbasil · 06/04/2024 07:19

It depends where you live. Most people in Wales would be familiar with the name Dyfan and how to pronounce it

MotherOfCatBoy · 06/04/2024 07:21

I’m in Wales, don’t know the name Dyfan, but do know how to pronounce it and I really like it!

devildeepbluesea · 06/04/2024 07:22

Both lovely names. My nephew is Bryn!

WhereAreWeNow · 06/04/2024 07:23

Bryn

Pinkpinkpink15 · 06/04/2024 07:33

Dyfan

even for someone who doesn't speak Welsh & doesn't understand the language, it's easy enough to remember & say.

the kids his age might not know if Gavin & Stacey but it only takes one child to see it and it'll catch on. I wouldn't choose it. Plus it's dated, and not due a revival!

Moreteaandchocolate · 06/04/2024 09:12

I prefer Bryn.

Small chance that Dyfan might get shortened to Div (I know that in Wales it shouldn’t be pronounced that way but, even in Wales, it only takes one…)

theduchessofspork · 06/04/2024 12:40

Bryn - great name

His peers won’t know Gavin and Stacey (and neither do lots of adults now)

KirstenBlest · 06/04/2024 13:43

Both are nice. Bryn seems a bit of a 60-yr old's name. (Bryn Fôn, Bryn Terfel, Bryn Williams, Uncle Bryn ...). Don't know many Dyfans but they tend to be 'Dyf' and he'll get 'Diffun' a fair bit, if that's a worry.

I'll suggest Glyn, Dyfrig or Bleddyn as alternatives.

pambeesleyhalpert · 07/04/2024 13:54

I love bryn. I know 2, one in his 30s and one who is 2!

IrisM22 · 07/04/2024 13:55

It means 'hill' in Welsh.

scribblingout · 07/04/2024 13:57

Dyfan

boonr · 07/04/2024 13:58

Definitely Dylan.

I know of a little boy called Defi in case you like that too!

boonr · 07/04/2024 13:58

Dyfan not Dylan!!

Yddraig25 · 07/04/2024 14:01

I really like Dyfan and know a handful myself - they tend to be in their 40's so not popular for children these days. But feel it is more contempary than Bryn.

As for shortening to "Div" I wouldn't worry about that as it's pronnounced "Dove-An" so most of the ones I know have it shortened to "Dyf" "(Dove") even by non Welsh Speakers.

KirstenBlest · 07/04/2024 16:00

Dyfan was pretty unusual when I was young. There was a famous Welsh actor with the name and that was about it. Dylan was everywhere, so I think Dyfan became more popular after Dylan became overused.

The Dillun pronunciation puts me off Dylan. It's nice otherwise.

LlynTegid · 07/04/2024 16:01

I'd choose Bryn were it me.

canol · 25/06/2024 07:56

Dyfan

Bryn

Greengrapeofhome · 25/06/2024 08:17

I like Dyfan. I don’t know any younger Bryn’s (although maybe it’s due a revival)

PurpleChrayn · 25/06/2024 08:49

Bryn.

Dyfan sounds like doofus.

MonaChopsis · 25/06/2024 09:15

Bryn.

Dyfan sounds like doofus.

Dyfan sounds about as much like Doofus as PurpleChrayn does like PoppyCock.

Both are lovely. I know two Dyfan's and both are called Dyf ('Dove') for short.

SarahSosej · 25/06/2024 09:17

I was in school with a Dyfan. Both are lovely names.

Dyfans. Apostrophe not needed.
