Eve or Eva

I understand both are popular but these are the only names we can both agree we like, but can’t choose between the two!

Any opinions welcome :)

Eva!! I may be biased as I have one - she’s 19 now and really loves her name. It’s not as common as those on MN make it out to be, there’s only 1 other Eva in her year group of 200 at school

Moreteaandchocolate · 03/04/2024 18:41

I love both but voted for Eve, it’s such a simple, elegant name!

BoleynMemories13 · 03/04/2024 18:48

Both nice but I generally prefer two syllable names so voted for Eva.

takemeawayagain · 03/04/2024 18:49

I prefer Eva, Eve has too much religious significance.

smellpretty · 03/04/2024 18:54

Eve

Love Eve!

DontGiveADuck · 03/04/2024 18:56

Eva.

Both so popular with all the Evies. Especially if you use the filler middle names of Rose/Grace/May which have been done to death.

Catandsquirrel · 03/04/2024 19:03

Both beautiful but surname makes a big difference I think with such a short, vowely name.

What does it start with?

If it starts with a vowel sound I would personally go with Eve. It flows better ending in a consonant sound and you might get intrusive /r/ in some dialects, think Eever Ainsley. Not a bad thing per se, just part of dialectal speech, but it would affect pronunciation.

For a consonant initial, Eva might edge it in terms of flow. I think Eva Jackson/Telford flows a bit nicer than Eve McDonald for instance. Not a huge difference but just sounds a bit more elegant to me.

If it starts with F or V then definitely Eva.

If then surname ends in 'er', or /a/ I would personally go Eve rather than rhyme. So Eve Piper not Eva Baker.

Eve.

GallbladderWoes · 03/04/2024 19:15

I went with Eva as you can still use Eve as a dimuitive.

Anecdotal: I went to a catholic secondary in the 90s and in the whole 5 years I was there we only had one Eve and one Eva, the latter being pronounced Ever/Evvah

Jeannie88 · 03/04/2024 19:18

Eva, Evie or Ava, just to mix it up a bit lol 😆

Lauwilk · 03/04/2024 20:15

Thanks so much for the input everyone!

I thought Eve would be more popular than Eva for some reason but that definitely doesn’t seem to be the case!

weirdly I really dislike the name Ava which is odd given that I like Eva. Also not keen on Evie but am aware that an Eve could end up lengthened to Evie.

Surname along the lines of Jackson :) middle name would be three syllables if we went for Eve, or two if we went for Eva

I like Eve better than Eva but much prefer Evie.

OwlBasket · 03/04/2024 20:37

Eva. I love Evelyn too.

RavenswoodFalls · 03/04/2024 20:41

Depends on how you’re pronouncing Eva for me. I personally dislike it when pronounced Ee-vah so would go for Eve over that one, but prefer Ay-vah to Eve.

pinkpanther84 · 03/04/2024 20:45

Eva

SkaneTos · 03/04/2024 21:10

I voted for Eva, but they are both lovely names!

Copperoliverbear · 03/04/2024 22:43

I like Eva or Ava not Eve. X

FayCarew · 04/04/2024 12:06

Eve. I don't like Eva or Ava.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/04/2024 21:52

Eve - strong, simple, elegant and more timeless as it’s less used ( I know a few of differing ages). Plus the palindrome thing makes it sound cool too (probably why it seems to be often used in sci-fi/fantasy). The only thing that used to put me off about it was the slightly negative (to some people) Biblical link but since Eve’s become more popular in the last decade or two, I don’t think that’s so much of an issue anymore.

Eva is a pretty classic and more international but I feel it blends into a lot of similar vowely 2 syllable names that are so popular at the moment - Ella, Emma, Ivy, Ellie, Elsie, Isla, Ava, Evie… As a single syllable name Eve makes more of a statement and feels a bit more interesting to me (despite not being that unusual anymore and there being lots of Ev- names).

Bax765 · 07/04/2024 10:11

Definitely Eva!
