Aurelia

Evening all,

Something about Aurelia intrigues me. I know it seems to be getting more popular.
Would there be pronunciation issues au-ray-lee-ah / au-ree-lee-ah?
Do you think it's likely to be shortened? I much prefer given names that are unlikely to be shortened, I know you can't 100% guarantee no nicknames.
Would it go with Noah?

I'd pronounce it or-ray-lya or or-rayl-ya. I think it's a beautiful name. There's also Aurelie.

People will always find a way to shorten a name if they wish, even if it's not actually shorter. Shortened examples would be aura, ray and lia/leah.

I think it goes with Noah.

I say I think a lot because names are so subjective. What I think could be the same/completely different to everyone else.

tsmainsqueeze · 26/03/2024 19:23

I think it sounds like the name of a body part.

Moreteaandchocolate · 26/03/2024 19:36

I would say it au-re-lia. It has a pretty sound, but as a 4 syllable name it’s likely to get shortened - and if you don’t pick a short version you like then people tend to go for the first part of the name, which doesn’t work too well with Aurelia (sounds a bit close to oral). I personally prefer shorter names unless there’s a lovely short version that works for children and adults, as longer names do tend to get shortened unless you go through life correcting people saying “no, I like to be called Aurelia”.

GingerSquid · 26/03/2024 19:38

It’s a pretty name, but a bit fussy compared to Noah; to me they are off different mood boards. I’d go for something like Alma with Noah.

CaptainCarrotsBigSword · 26/03/2024 19:40

Very pretty. I know two - one a relative and one shares a reception class with my youngest (different counties). So I'd say, purely anecdotally, that the popularity of the name is on the up.

I pronounce it Orr-ray-lee-ah, if that makes any sense!

CaptainCarrotsBigSword · 26/03/2024 19:41

Oh and as far as I know, neither Aurelia gets their name shortened. I guess Ray and Lia would be the obvious ones?

AllThePotatoesAreSinging · 26/03/2024 19:41

Lovely name

BigBreaths · 26/03/2024 19:47

Our friend has an Aurelia, pronounced Or- REE- lia. They call her Olly (Aully??) for short.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/03/2024 19:54

Aw- ray- lee- ah. One of those ancient Roman/Greek names that might have been seen as a bit much 10/15 years ago but everyone is searching for the new Olivia now - so it’s one of those similar names like Ophelia, Aurora etc that are greatly on the increase and won’t seem very unusual anymore imo.

I think it’s beautiful- although yes, still a bit uncommon/fancy sounding in comparison to super popular and simpler Noah ( Don’t go for Aurelie though- I think the “ah” ending in Aurelia distracts from “orally“ but Aurelie would be a risk) .

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/03/2024 19:59

No more pronunciation issues for Aurelia than for Esme, Naomi, Maya, Eleanor, Andrea, Helena, Mila … and dozens of other names with 2 accepted pronunciations. But yes, will likely get shortened - probably to Aura or Rae as a 4 syllable name is a bit of a mouthful when shouted in a rush!

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 26/03/2024 20:03

I have a 13 year old Au, rel, li, a! Love her name and she's never met another one.

NuffSaidSam · 26/03/2024 20:03

I don't think there will be pronunciation issues.

Not keen on it as a name though, it sounds like a disorder of the ears.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 26/03/2024 20:22

I have a friend called Aurelie which I think is a really pretty name and I've never met another one.

@IamnotwhouthinkIam What sort of name would you expect to see alongside Noah? If Aurelia is quite fancy. Curious to know as find girls names completely and utterly impossible. I don't love any.

Maybe something similar but a bit shorter, e.g.

Ayla
Aria
Alice
Ava
Alyssa
Alara
Amaya
Aster
Anya
Amelia

Other ideas

Layla
Lyra
Isla
Ivy
Iris
Mila
Maya
Freya
Thea

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 26/03/2024 20:47

It sounds too fussy to me personally

For some reason I can imagine a Noah with a sister called Ava - I think because they rapidly shot up the charts at a similar time and have a similar style to me. Or if you like Aurelia then more likely something like Amelia with Noah instead - simply as both are so popular. But if not those then probably something similarly shortish , and/ or popular or Biblical.

So maybe:
Hannah/Anna
Lydia
Mia/Maria
Lily
Grace
Sara/Sarah
Eve/Eva
Emily
Esme
Isabel
Rose
Zara
Ella
Lara
Thea
Erin
Sophie/Sophia

Have you gone on to ONS and checked out the top 200 or so? The data is a bit old now ( over 3 years old I think- Aurelia would almost certainly be in the top 150 or so if we had accurate data for this year!) but it might give you some other ideas for girls names that sound nice with Noah. Good luck!
