We don't know what we're having yet as we want it to be a surprise. My husband is Polish and we would love a name that works here as well as in Poland and Germany, where my relatives are from.

This is our list:

Aniela (sounds like ahn-yell-a)
Malina (mah-lee-na)
Liliana
Lilia
Kalina (kah-lee-na)
Pola
Andżelika (we would be willing to spell this Angelica as it would be easier)
Jásmina (we might change this to Yasmina)
Apolonia
Kaja (we might spell this Kaya, pr. kah-ya)
Oliwia (only like the Polish/German pronunciation so might take this off the list)

Comments appreciated!

I like Aniela and Liliana. I also have a soft spot for (not on the list) Anya, Magdalena and Estera.

Emilia
:)

DontGiveADuck · 15/03/2024 18:31

Definitely not Malina! The pronunciation is the same more or less.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 15/03/2024 18:35

I wanted a little Zosia but instead I had a little Olek 🙂

Followed by
Aleksandra
Halina
Luiza

Please don’t use Malina. Literally anyone even slightly medical will read it as black tarry smelly diarrhoea.
It doesn’t matter if you spell it melena. Malina, melaena. It sounds the same and in English it means shit quite literally

Stephania

My mil is Janina which works fine in English as does her middle stefanya (used for DD2) for DD1 we used Ursula but as a middle name as a little marmite.

IntermittentFarting · 15/03/2024 18:48

Sorry, OP, I gave you my suggestion - Zosia/Zofia - but didn’t critique your list!

Some beautiful names there. My favourites are:

Liliana
Jásmina
and Kaja

Friend’s mum was called Ursula and she called her DD Annabelle, no idea if that’s Polish. But were a Polish family on the mum’s side (mum born in england). I went to school with an Aleksandra (known as Alex) who had a second generation born Polish mother.

I know a Marlena and a Barbara both Polish and a few Kasias, friends of my friend Viola.

There’s also a Monika and Marlena and a Julia, I know, all Polish. The Julia and Viola I knew both wanted more anglicised names as they felt there was prejudice towards them in England as they’re both Polish born but live here.

Aniela is lovely but my worry in the UK is that people will say it A-nee-la.

Liliana and Lilia are lovely. I love Zosia as well.

Igam · 15/03/2024 19:47

I like Aniela, I’ve not heard it before but it’s lovely. It’s similar to Daniela too so should be easy enough to pronounce and spell.

i have taught little polish girls called Natalia and Emilia which I thought were lovely names. Also ewelina I think it was spelt which is beautiful

rainbowbee · 15/03/2024 19:49

Aneta
Kamila
Polina
All Polish women I know whose names are easily pronounced

Revelatio · 15/03/2024 20:38

I know a Malina, everyone can easily pronounce it. I honestly wouldn’t worry though. Call your child the name you like, people know how to say it after the first introduction. There are British names that are hard to pronounce too. Luckily the UK is becoming more multicultural and people don’t need to ‘fit in’ so much anymore, especially if you are in a more metropolitan area.
