(No offence intended to any sensible Americans posting on here)

Our local football magnate who is American took his kids to an Easter service and his pic is in the paper. His kids are called Brock (boy), MacCall, Avery and Quinn (all girls). These are not first names are they? And they all sound like boys? names to me too.

Oddly enough the dad is called (wait for it?) Andrew.

And Scout is the lovely child in To Kill a Mockingbird.

FAQ · 26/03/2008 20:42

I know quite a few (female) Robins....

expatinscotland · 26/03/2008 20:43

it's dumb, WW. like the parents.

and the child's name was Jean Louise.

expatinscotland · 26/03/2008 20:44

Such made up, stupid names.

Another reason I'm glad I don't have to live there anymore.

WendyWeber · 26/03/2008 20:45

What, Scout's name was Jean-Louise? Was she called that much? I thought it was just when she'd been bad!

expatinscotland · 26/03/2008 20:47

hmm, C for effort at sarcasm.

skidoodle · 26/03/2008 20:49

OMG

Crutcher nearly burst my CS wound, that is possibly the worst name I've ever heard. It's so wrong for so many reasons it's almost right.

My DH is telling our daughter she just missed out on being called Crutcher by 5 days.

Mum2b2BabyRoo · 26/03/2008 21:05

There is an American guy at my work called Bright!!!!

expatinscotland · 26/03/2008 21:06

I worked with a chap called Forrest in Denver.

LimeJellyforBrains · 26/03/2008 21:15

Back in 1999 during my first pg I used to look at Babycentre (it was all I could find at the time) which was basically a US site. At the time the East Timor uprising was big in the news (in our papers at least) as its people were being slaughtered by the Indonesian govt. A US mom-to-be asked whether we all thought Jakarta wasn't a lovely name for a girl, it had 'just popped into her head' apparently.

MadameCh0let · 26/03/2008 22:18

Ha ha LImeJellyforBrains. That was me , my 9 yr old dd is called Jakkii now though.

When I was 17 and there were floods in Sudan, I walked into McDonalds and asked for a chocolate Sudan.

Clary · 26/03/2008 23:58

lou that's what I said to DH tonight (Quinn as Quim I mean).

I challenged him to sex the kids unseen and he got Brock and Avery ("as in the scales?") right. A badger, but evidently a boy badger.

Crutcher is a really horrible name.

Madame cholet are those really their first names? Hoyt?? wtf?
Athene I agree the Beckhams' names are very strange. On th esame thought, Kerala, was Camden a girl then???

Jackie loving that about Keith and Ian. There is an American Kevin in DD's year, so aged 7. I guess names like that sound way out and cool if you're used to kids called Hoyt and Tanner. lolol

Should add I don't normally feel the need to call other people's name choices (glass houses and all - plenty of people would/do heartily dislike the names we chose!)

But I just thought this set was totally priceless.

From Wisconsin, 5+ years in UK now. I actually had a Brach in my class growing up, and expat we always joked about the candy!

To the OP, I would have said all those were boys names as well. And poncey ones to boot.

DP (Londoner) says if people can name their kids stuff like Brooklyn, Dakota, Camden etc then our kids are going to be called Chingford (girl) and Walthamstow (boy).

WendyWeber · 27/03/2008 00:13

Hoyt has been around a while

Americans have always had funny made-up names, and I honestly think the kids won't get "quinn...quim" or "Brick...dick" or "Brock...cock" because nearly all their names are weird and potential teases.

However I do worry about those American kids in a kind and tolerant English playground ; let's hope they go to an international school.

expatinscotland · 27/03/2008 00:13

Brach's Pick a Mix. Brach's chocolate covered cherries.

I actually went on a university course at Georgetown with one of those very old money, Southern types with a name a mile long.

His name was read out by the lecturer on the first day and he said, 'Here, but please, call me Fud.'

Upsidedowncake · 27/03/2008 00:20

My DH is American and he has cousins called Taylor, Tanner (!), Cayden, Andi (girl) and Jamie (girl).

There is a real trend for calling boys by surnames. Had to talk him out of calling our son Gunner (dm's maiden name) and Colton (his grandmother's name.

expatinscotland · 27/03/2008 00:21

they call boys surnames nad girls boys forenames.

Buda · 27/03/2008 06:17

There is an Apple working at DS's school here in Budapest. She is in her 20s. So Gwynnie wasn't as dumb as I thought!

MadameCh0let · 27/03/2008 08:16

Funnily enough, after Apple Martin was born I kept reading or hearing about other ones. And I'm reading a very good book by Fanny Flagg and a character has a baby Apple!

To think I worried about Gus García and everybody said NO you can't do that awful awful awful. And then Gwynnie did Moses Martin. That def sounds worse imo!

MadameCh0let · 27/03/2008 08:18

Sur name thing getting a bit tired. THe smart money is on Peter. That would really stand out in a US creche wouldn't it?

Nbg · 27/03/2008 08:21

I like these surname names.
Not so sure about Maccall for a girl but the rest I quite like.

My ds1 has a surname name.

Someone mentioned Robin as a girls name. We have friends in Holland who called their dd Robin.

lotuseener · 27/03/2008 09:03

I know 2 English mums that have named their daughters Topaz and Saphire, names that I had only previously associated with American Drag Queens. Americans aren't the only ones guilty of naming their kids stupid names...

However my American cousins have named their daughter Nevaeh (as in heaven spelled backwards- too precious) and their boys Harley and Ryker. Their surname is Horn. Harley Horn and Ryker Horn. Yep.
