Louis Vs Louie

I'm really liking this boys name, however my husband is dyslexic and cannot get his head around the more traditional Louis spelling because he just thinks it should be said like Lewis. He suggested spelling it Lewie but I'm not a fan
What are people's thoughts on Louie instead, is that quite usual and won't be considered 'wrong?'

Louis

It’s a popular name anyway but especially because of Prince Louis I don’t think anyone won’t get it

You would think wouldn’t you, but mine still regularly gets ‘Lewis’. I still have no regrets spelling it Louis though.

Thanks all! My main thoughts were about my DH and his preferred spelling given his dyslexia, obviously he would get used to it if we went with Louis rather than Louie (don't worry, never would it have been Lewie haha!). I wouldn't mind someone mispronouncing it Lewis and needing to be corrected and similarly having to correct a spelling to Louie from Louis also wouldn't bother me. For 30 years I've had a last name that everyone adds a D to that it doesn't have so I'm used to it 😂 but thanks all just wanted the general consensus, seems most lean towards Louis but also Louie isn't considered wrong so guess it's fine whichever way we go overall 😃

I'd pick a different name op.

There's a lot nicer ones out there.

Flopsy145 · 10/03/2024 08:13

@Doyouknowdanieltiger fair point haha, we've agreed on veeeery few names so far. The only other two we like are Arthur and Eddie, in our area though Arthur is often pronounced Arfa which I hate 😂 we also have a very common surname and Arthur is very popular these days. So Eddie is really the only other one we're thinking of at the mo

Personally I really like it

Louie always makes me think of Donald Duck, one of his nephews was Louie I think.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 10/03/2024 18:43

Louis.
louie if you must but please never lewie. Makes you look illiterate.

I don’t think Louie is any better on that front

Flopsy145 · 10/03/2024 20:01

Update, DH now thinks it's all too complicated making a decision and has vetoed the name 😂 thank you all though!

Good move by DH. BTW I can never remember how Prince Louis is pronounced.

user1492757084 · 11/03/2024 02:22

Louis or you look like you have no knowledge of the English language.
Louis is well known.

Have your dislexic husband read through the names in the British and French Royal family trees. It is a name originating from the French who traditionally drop the sound of the last letter. Similar words are buffet and ballet.

Louie is fine for a nick name for Louise or Louis

There are other names - Lewellyn and Lewis that could have the nick name Lew and Lewie.

yikesanotherbooboo · 11/03/2024 09:27

I have never come across Louie except as a pet name for Louise/a .Louis is not at all unusual and is the accepted spelling of this name in the UK. In the next few years it will be seen in print on a regular basis due to the prince and any confusion that there could be will dissipate. It is a pain for DC to have to keep spelling their name out when parents choose idiosyncratic spellings . Persuade your DH to stick to the Louis if you can.

Clearinguptheclutter · 11/03/2024 09:34

I prefer Louis but I think Louie is ok.

I think since we had a prince, Louis is more likely to be pronounced correctly

NOT Lewie

PurpleChrayn · 12/03/2024 14:32

Louis.

Louie is a bit silly.

Lalupalina · 12/03/2024 15:19

I wouldn’t know how to pronounce Louie to be honest!

Where on earth are you living? In the UK Louie is the more popular spelling and is simply pronounced Lou-ie. Exactly as it's written.

In most countries outside of France Louis is pronounced Lou-is. As is the city of St Louis in Missouri.

Since when did Louie become the more popular spelling? Agree that it looks like a shortening for Louise/a.

We've got a Louie .. spelt it that way instead of Louis as I didn't want it pronounced Lewis and felt Louie was more obvious how to say it!

YorkBound · 13/03/2024 22:09

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 10/03/2024 06:12

If you attend to live outside the uk at anyooibt then use Louie. In the us/germany//netherlands etc Louis is prounounced as Lewis.

if staying in uk Louis is nicer and should be pronounced as Lou-ee

I think France might count as outside the U.K.

YorkBound · 13/03/2024 22:10

I have a DS Louis. He's 19 and I've never had anyone mispronounce it as Lewis.

ok but a lot of people on the thread are saying that Louis is always pronounced Louie and whilst that is the case in the uk and yes also France, it is not in a lot of other countries.
