Boy/Girl twins - Classic and Simple

After a very long time trying and two rounds of IVF our twins are due next month, boy and a girl. We thought after so long waiting the names would come naturally but it's not the case. We like short, simple, classic and timeless names. Our list so far is

Boy

  • Henry
  • James
  • Alex
  • Adam

Girls

  • Alice
  • Katie
  • Anna
  • Emma
  • Sophie

My favourite is either Alice and James or Katie and James. DH loves Anna and Alex or Emma and Adam

Middle names will be Matthew and Elizabeth, surname is Palmer.

We can't use or don't like

  • Daniel
  • Sam
  • Jack
  • Edward
  • Harry
  • Oliver
  • Emily
  • Hannah
  • Lucy
  • Clara
  • Ella/Ellie

Which combination do you like best and why ideas we've missed?

All are fabulous. My faves from your suggestions ..

James Matthew sounds the best.
Anna Elizabeth 10/10
Sophie Elizabeth 10/10
Alice Elizabeth 9/10
So James and Anna, James and Sophie or James and Alice.

Others ...
Henry James and Eliza Alice
Clive Alexander and Sophie Elizabeth
Thomas Matthew and Jane Elizabeth

All great.

Also will throw in Thomas (Tom) and Grace.

James and Helena
Henry and Sofia

I absolutely love your names. I don't think you can go wrong with any combination from your list (sorry if that's not very helpful!).

Congratulations and good luck with everything Flowers

All very nice names but Sophie/Sophia is incredibly popular - the most popular female baby name in all Europe, I believe. But it's still lovely.

Other classics: Elizabeth, Helen/Helena, Susannah, Catherine/Katharine (rather than Katie), Louisa, Lucy, Caroline, Rosalind, Frances - and I like Jane.

For boys: Robert, Edmund, Gregor/Gregory, Julius/Julian, Leonard, Jonathan, Joseph and good old John....
I'd spell 'Alistair' as 'Alasdair', because it's the standard Scottish version of the Gaelic.

Best wishes!

Gorgeous choices❤️- I love a classic name as it often means you can’t tell a persons age or social background which could have lots of benefits ( plus as a bonus it often means they have some nice historical namesakes too).

I’d personally eliminate Katie and Alex as unlike C/Katherine and Alexander they aren’t as classic as given names (actually feel a bit 90’s to me personally).

Since you have so many lovely choices, I also agree with a pp I’d eliminate Sophie and Henry as there seem a lot at the moment - I don’t mind a top 10/20 name as such but once you add all the Sophie/Sofia/Sophia’s and Henry/Harry’s together it might be a bit much.

Top pick for me would probably be Anna and James, just because I love the names the most.

But I’d be so tempted by Anna and Adam - I’d find the repeated letters and 2 syllable pattern hard to resist as it’s so sweet together 🤣 (yet the individual names aren’t cutesy sounding).

Btw I shared an initial with my brother (I’m female) and it was no big deal - letters typically had Mr or Miss on them so no post confusion. We both have classic names too.

Btw If you love a classic name, I assume you’ve considered William or Thomas? ( as along with James they are the most consistently well used names for boys). Classic girls names are harder to pin down but maybe also consider Julia, Maria or Charlotte?

Peter and Jane.

Thank you everyone

We've landed on a two for each baby

Alice or Anna for a girl and James or William for a boy.

I think I like Alice and William best but DH is more sold on James and Anna.

Good idea to have spares so you can see which name best fits the particular baby. Somehow you will know. These are really sensible choices no child should resent, though as teenagers they may prefer something more fanciful.
Good luck and congrats now the journey is nearly ended.

Katie Elizabeth is what my eldest would have been called if they were a girl.

I like James & Katie

glasshalffull0 · 09/03/2024 15:18

Alice and James
or
Alice and Henry

glasshalffull0 · 09/03/2024 15:20

Oops didn't read your update!

Alice is such a beautiful name, Anna is lovely too but there is just something particularly beautiful about Alice.

For the boys, maybe opinions on nicknames may sway you? Jim/Jimmy vs Will? (I'm a teacher and every William I have taught had their name shortened to Will but it's about 50/50 to whether James becomes Jim or Jimmy)

Soowoo · 09/03/2024 15:24

I’m team James and Anna

TwentyFirstCenturyFox · 09/03/2024 15:34

I really like
James and Emma
And
Henry and Anna

I’m voting for Alice and William - gorgeous!

Anna and James is lovely too though.

Could you have Alice and James as a compromise between both of your favourites?

I'd choose Alice and James. My preference is for girls to have names that don't end with an 'ee' or 'uh' sound and if naming b/g twins, I'd definitely want the girl to have a strong ending to her name if her brother was having one for his.
