Casper to Caz

Hello, We love the name Casper and Cass for short but, just personally, really aren't keen on Caz. I wondered whether anyone has, or knows, a Casper and whether they have found people do shorten it to Caz? I realise as a parent you have little control over a nickname, and I don't want to be that mother who chants "it's not Caz" all his life, but I'd be very keen to know if people think it would happen! Many thanks :)

From your title, I was all set to say Cas is the typical shortening around here.
I think of Caz as Caroline.
Cas as Casper (and Caspian)

Sorry, you’ll have no control over nicknames at school. My mum called me a name with a nickname she hated. Everyone at school called me the nickname. I know a Casper called Caz. The names are very close, possibly too close for younger children to differentiate, so Caz will probably stick.

As teenagers they start to choose their own short versions of their names, and you have little control. My cousin was called one short version for her childhood (by her parents preference) and then promptly changed to the short version her parents hated at the age of 13 and is still called that now in her 30’s! Having said that, Caz is low risk as Cass is the more obvious shortening of Casper.

If you like the name just go for it. We found kids started their own nicknames for each other from y4/5 and by that point I no longer cared as much. We have a child with a nickname I hate (think Will for William) amd now thats what everyone calls him at school but it's just one of those things you get over!

I know a Caspar and he was Casp at school. Caz is Caroline to me.

SplitFountainPen · 27/02/2024 07:34

I'd think it would naturally shorten to casp, as cas or caz involves changing the sound.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 27/02/2024 08:31

Caz sounds very feminine to me (normally heard it short for carol, Karen or Caroline) so I would have thought it unlikely to be shortened to caz.

Caspar has been on my list for a while (I have only had girls) and I'd shorten to Cass as well. However, I'm very aware that nicknames change quickly. I disliked one NN for my 7yo, hated another, the disliked one has become her preferred NN and it's grown on me!
(She's Artemis, we used Temi originally, people started using Arty/Arte and she prefers it and it's grown on me massively! I draw the line at Missy though, only one person has ever tried it and got rebuffed instantly 😅)

I have never heard a Caz, it doesn't flow naturally from the pronunciation of Caspar. Cas and Caspy are the two I have heard most. Caspy more a pet name from grandparents for a baby, Cas as the nickname from teachers/friends etc. I rather like Cas!

peaceinourtime · 27/02/2024 12:50

Caz/Kaz is normally short for Caroline or Karen

Bluegetaniums · 27/02/2024 13:52

Caz is definitely a natural shortening for Caspar, Casimir or Caspian.

I've only heard Caroline shortened to Carol or Carrie.

toomanysausages · 27/02/2024 22:54

I know a Caspar. Nn Cas.
