Alec?

Love this name for if it’s a DS. Traditional but uncommon. A name on its own whereas if we used Alex I feel he would have to be Alexander which I’m not as fond of.

Baby would be part Scottish, Irish and English (from grandparents not parents though) and living in England.

Other name ideas we have are just very simple and traditional, nobody would bat an eyelid but there likely would be multiple in the class.

What does everyone think?

It was my Dads name and we gave it to my eldest son as his middle name.

As a grumpy teen he says he doesn't like it, but I know as an adult he will be proud to carry the name.

But saying that, I do feel Alex suits kids more, Alec is quite a heavy name iykwim? Hence is using as a middle name only.

I like it, I’ve only ever met one who I work with. He’s an Alexander in full but I’ve only even known him as Alec.

Alasitsme · 26/02/2024 10:45

Chances are both names derive from Alexander which many people break up so the middle S sound goes with the ending of the name rather than the beginning, which is how you end up with Xand/Sandy/Sandra.

If you don't like Alexander, don't use it! Pick whiecher name you like. No one is judging all the Charlie's for not being Charles or Alfie's for not being Alfred. Your kid, your choice.

Yes, I like Alec!

Sandysandwich · 26/02/2024 11:11

I like Alec. I also know a few men called Alex who are not Alexander at all.

Nicebloomers · 26/02/2024 13:16

It’s a great name. I’m surprised it’s not more popular.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 26/02/2024 13:43

But Alec is also short for Alexander?

I'm not wild about it I'm afraid OP... I'm a middle aged Scotswoman, and for me Alec is someone's uncle or grandad!
My friend had an uncle Eck (short for Alec, which was short for Alexander!)

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 26/02/2024 13:44

My DSS was christened Alex so you can still do that if you prefer it?

B0G0F · 26/02/2024 14:01

Alec is fine on its own, but he might get called Alex quite a bit.
Alec Guinness - Wikipedia wasn't an Alexander.

Alec Is a great name. I know of one who would be ~18 now.

lioneggs · 26/02/2024 21:24

I love Alec. And aled

Awrite · 26/02/2024 21:32

To me, Alex is more a name in its own right than Alec.

I grew up with Alec being short for Alexander.

Alex feels modern. I am Scottish though so Alecs were aplenty.

WaitingForSunnyDays · 26/02/2024 21:37

I love Alec!

TheOriginalEmu · 27/02/2024 11:01

I’m never sure how to pronounce it. Because Aled is a definite E (like egg) In the second syllable. But Alex is more an i (like in) or a schwa in the second syllable. So is AL-ec or AL-ic.
I like how it looks though!

I would pronounce it the second one
