Arthur or Theodore?

Hi, We have a Charlotte (Lottie) already and just found out we are having a boy. My husband likes Arthur and Theodore (nn Teddy) but I'm really unsure. If I'm honest, I don't feel I like any boys names at all and struggle to imagine actually using either name. I potentially like Theo more as a nickname...the other name on our list is Henry.

I like Nathaniel, Isaac and Elliott but my husband dislikes them all so I'm a bit stuck!

So any help would be much appreciated! Which would you pick?

We've got a Theodore - most often called Teddy. It was the only name we could agree on and I insisted Theodore over Teddy so he has options when he's older. We call him Ted most of the time at the moment - he's 18 months. I think Lottie and Teddy works as does Lottie and Arthur or Lottie and Theo. Nathaniel was on my list but DH said no to that!

I love all your name choices and ideas! Theodore is gorgeous with great options for short versions as he gets older. I’m also a massive fan of Arthur, I think I would pick that of the two personally as it’s slightly less overused and has that lovely traditional feel the same as Charlotte. Henry is another great option.

Other ideas -

Harry
Alexander
Max
Benjamin
Tobias / Toby
Zachary / Zac
Sebastian
Samuel
Thomas
James
William
Edward
Jonathan
Leo
Stanley

Henry is by far my favourite name in your post. But Arthur and Theodore/Teddy/Theo are all so popular that in a way, it really doesn’t matter which you pick, and they’re kind of interchangeable in that way. It might be worth waiting until he’s born and maybe you’ll find one or the other will suit him better.

DontGiveADuck · 25/02/2024 10:25

I adore Theo. Arthur is ok but the one I know is called Artie which I don’t love.

Obvs92 · 25/02/2024 10:26

Our DS is Theodore Arthur - use both!

Biscuitsneeded · 25/02/2024 10:26

Both are great names, and Henry is nice too. In that vein, in the spirit of finding something you both like, how about Edward (Eddie) or William (Bill or Billy)?

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 25/02/2024 11:13

I prefer Henry.

out of Arthur and Theodore I would choose Theodore. I don’t like the sound of the full name but do like Theo and Teddy.

Salacia · 25/02/2024 11:52

I like both - both very popular though (the last three babies I know have been Arthur’s!) so depends how much that bothers you. Lovely names though with options for nicknames etc.

If you’re not sure about Arthur and Theodore, I’d be inclined to veto and go back to the drawing board with your husband. Unfair that you have to convince yourself to get on board with them if he can’t meet you half way with your list.

Bluegetaniums · 25/02/2024 12:28

Arthur and Theodore are soo popular and imo overused that they will probably start to sound a little dated as they fall out of fashion.

I much prefer Nathaniel and Elliot as they are less fashionable and more classic and timeless imo

MerryChristmasToYou · 25/02/2024 13:22

I don't like Theodore, so Arthur.

BoleynMemories13 · 25/02/2024 13:40

Could you compromise and go for Theodore nn Theo? Personally I prefer Theo to Teddy. That way your husband gets the full name he loves, and you get the short form you prefer for it.

I like Arthur too. Shame he dislikes Isaac as that's my favourite.

Bluegetaniums · 25/02/2024 13:42

If your surname is fairly common I'd avoid a super common name like Theo(dore) or Arthur - he'll be one many!

HelloDarlingWhatAreYouDoingHere · 25/02/2024 14:08

Arthur

theduchessofspork · 25/02/2024 17:35

Arthur.

It has been v overused but right now Theodore is the one being done to death.

It’s also a fabulous name

MerryChristmasToYou · 25/02/2024 18:04

I prefer Henry to Arthur, and Theo/Theodore is so overused.

RuthW · 25/02/2024 18:05

Arthur. It's a very popular name but not as bad as Theodore/Ted/Teddy

AmaryllisChorus · 25/02/2024 18:09

I like Arthur and love Theodore - it's very versatile - Teddy, Ted, Theo/

PleaseBePacific · 25/02/2024 18:09

Henry is best out the 3. I like Theo but very popular. Strongly dislike the name Arthur, no idea why!

I prefer your choices tbh

OopsieeDaisy · 25/02/2024 21:47

Henry is a lovely name, my favourite of the ones you have mentioned. Theodore nn Theo or Ted is ok but there are just so many of them right now!

Soowoo · 25/02/2024 22:10

My vote is for Henry
