Is 'Dagmar' OK for England?

How would you pronounce it?

If told it is said 'DUG-muh' (really the g is between g and k but g is close enough) would you have any trouble with that?

It's fine for the UK but I don't like it, it's too gutteral.

Octavia64 · 21/02/2024 15:26

I'd pronounce it

Dag -mar

So not the way you said.

I'd probably remember if you told me.

Robinbuildsbears · 21/02/2024 15:26

I think most people would manage fine. You might sometimes get it misheard as "dogma" though.

DorothyZ · 21/02/2024 15:27

I would say Dag mar like the old pub in Eastenders.

JamSandle · 21/02/2024 15:28

Dag-Mar

PrincessOfPreschool · 21/02/2024 15:30

I would say 'dag - mar'. It would be v hard to say the other sounds with an English accent and I guarantee it would be butchered by nurseries/ teachers until your child was used to the incorrect pronunciation. Depends if you could live with that.

The correct pronunciation does sound a bit like you're coughing up phlegm (sorry!) and don't really like the sound of it.

Sunset6 · 21/02/2024 15:33

It might morph into Doug or Dougie as a nickname.

DorothyZ · 21/02/2024 15:27

I would say Dag mar like the old pub in Eastenders.

First thing I thought of. Where willmot raped Kathy iirc.

idontlikealdi · 21/02/2024 15:37

I went to school with a Dagmar, she was Dutch and it was Dag-ma

IsadoraQuagmire · 21/02/2024 15:38

I'd say Dag-mar. I was listening to Dagmar Krause earlier, one of my favourites! Nice name.

Chypre · 21/02/2024 15:38

It surely is, as any ethnic name. But also DAGMAR is a term in marketing - Defining Advertising Goals for Measured Advertising Results :)

FortunataTagnips · 21/02/2024 15:42

It’s fine, though it does make me think of Kaffee and that swine Wilmott-Brown.

Onelife2024 · 21/02/2024 15:57

I think it would be ok, but just as a couple of things to consider - it looks / sounds a bit like dogma, and the word dag can be used as slang for someone who is a bit unfashionable / nerdy.

AWOL66 · 21/02/2024 16:02

I know someone with that name and some refer to her as "Daggers" and everyone pronounces it Dag-mar

Rotebeete · 21/02/2024 16:07

I would say Dag-ma / Dag-mar

I would definitely not say DUG-muh?!

MerryChristmasToYou · 21/02/2024 16:36

I'd say Dag-mar. From what language is it? It looks Scandinavian, so the g might sound different.

Rotebeete · 21/02/2024 17:05

It's German

Pronounced DAG-mar in German

Shopgirl1 · 21/02/2024 17:15

I know it from German, pronounced Dagmar with the stress on dag, and I think it’s very old fashioned sounding.

clarrylove · 21/02/2024 17:25

Not great in English. A dag is not a nice name and negative connections with EastEnders and the pub where Kathy got raped.

LyricalGangsta · 21/02/2024 17:53

No, because a girl called Dagmar snagged a bloke I liked when I was in my mid teens. I've never recovered.

DesPudelsKern · 21/02/2024 17:55

Ok cool, sorry, I'm cheating- not really a baby but my cousin who will spend some time in England and considers if she should use her middle name in place of this.

Correct pronunciation is a bit like dogma but really more like 'Duckmuh' and yes, often just 'Duggie' for short. Am going to recommend middle name I think.

Thank you all.

Shopgirl1 · 21/02/2024 17:57

I think it’s fine for a person from somewhere it’s common, I wouldn’t change her name. Just wouldn’t use it for a baby here..

Cornettoninja · 21/02/2024 19:20

@DesPudelsKern now I know she goes by duggie I really like it! Grin

PurpleChrayn · 21/02/2024 19:22

Very ugly.
