We are going to call our daughter Iona - have been back and forth over it as people have mentioned she might get picked on - but we know 2 of them that haven't had this problem, plus if she is going to be picked on, she will be regardless of her name! We love it and thats what her name is!

anyway her middle name will be francis, but just wondering if this is the correct female spelling as have been several alternate spellings!

thanks so much for your help!

Sarah

You want Frances, Francis is a man's name.

I think Frances is the feminine spelling, Francis the male.

Why would anyone pick on Iona? It's a stunning name.

B1977 · 22/03/2008 21:04

Why did anyone say she would get picked on for Iona? It's a lovely name.

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 22/03/2008 21:04

Frances

It's always tricky when choosing a childs name. I can see how the name might be used to be unkind, and lets face it, some kids are unkind

I know someone called Ioni, which is a slight variation on the name. And i love the name Francis

fryalot · 22/03/2008 21:07

I think you're right - if other kids are going to pick on her, if they don't pick on her because of her name, they'll find something else.

Iona is a beautiful name.

Frances is the correct spelling for a girl.

2HappyEaster · 22/03/2008 21:09

If ds1 was a girl he would have been Iona.

We made the mistake of telling some friends, who had dd shortly after. Guess what they called her

It is a beautiful name, and it's not that unusual, can't see why she'd get picked on for it.

the Bratwursts? Are they related to the Matlock Salamis?

fairibell · 22/03/2008 21:31

She will have the initials IFT - did consider Iona Frances Ann - but then the initials would have been IFAT so decided not!

has been a tricky one as we lost our little girl at 26 weeks of pregnancy last July, due to severe pre-eclampsia and as soon as we found out we were pregnant we knew her name would be Madison and that was the end of it - has been a little harder this time, but have come back to Iona over and over again so have now decided that is her name, regardless of what people say! - well unless we change our mind when she is born! We didn't with Madi though, that was her name and it just seemed right! Although she was Madison Hope, 99% sure she wouldnt have had the middle name as Hope if she had been born healthy at term (knew when she was born she was very poorly and had only 1% chance of survival - only lived a few minutes as was only 1 lb due to the preeclampsia.

Am now 27 weeks pregnant and baby already showing 2 lb 5 on growth scan - no signs of pre-eclampsia yet, so fingers crossed!

Has anyone been really set on a name and totally changed their minds at the last minute??

Iona is a beautiful name.

My ds was Greig from about 26 weeks pg until half an hour before he was born! We changed it to Ross at the last minute (my gran's maiden name) and it suits him to a T.

fryalot · 22/03/2008 21:37

I think that Iona is a beautiful name.

When I was pg with dd1 I knew all along that if she was a girl she would be a Natalie.

When she was born, I looked at her and thought "hmm... not sure she looks like a Natalie. She just looks like a... baby " but I named her Natalie and wihin a couple of days, it was her.

Now she's all teenagerish and wants to be Natt (double T no less ) but I never had a moment's doubt that Natalie was her name.

Sorry to read that you lost your Madison

schneebly · 22/03/2008 21:37

Iona is a beautiful name My niece is Iona.

I do know an Iona Barr though which is mildly amusing

Seriously though, a really lovely name and I wish you all the best for a healthy pregnancy and a happy outcome for all. x

singyswife · 22/03/2008 21:40

My dd's name was Nitascha until I seen her. We then changed it to Beth, we have quite a long surname and her name would have been too big for such a small person so we changed it to Beth and I love it.
