Hello
Posting here hoping for creative minds! I have just bought a woodland and it needs a new name. It's mostly deciduous, the focal point is the stream, there is a cottage and it's really rather lovely! There aren't any views or place names I'd like to name it after and I'm looking for something nice that there isn't already hundreds of around Britain. Thank you

Willowbrook or something is nice but bland. Oak Cottage, or whatever, is better.

describe the stream to us

TwelveKeys · 12/02/2024 13:44

The Cinnamons
Ye Woods
Excalibur Corner

Pen-Ys-Beakre

Sorry, I can't think of any serious ones, there's too much scope to be silly!

Streamside

what part of England is it in? You can get some good dialect words to replace the boring ones

KirstenBlest · 12/02/2024 13:46

Pen-Ys-Beakre. - Pen-y-Sbicar in Welsh, bach!

Pant-y-Leinar? Pant-y Trobwll?

Who says it's in England? Confused

Do you have to decide now?

If not, I would wait until you've spent time renovating the cottage and tidying it up and see what comes to you.

You may well find something that gives you an ideal name further down the line (or someone might come to see it and come up with something perfect) so if you can hold off until you feel inspired, I would do that.

Nothing to add except bravoooo OP.

I especially like that you are already in the area.

New aspiration unlocked.

You’re brave! Woodland management is hard work!

It sounds lovely though. Hope you enjoy it.

Cecelia's Wood?

My village's name (W Yorks) is the Viking for "Cecelia's wood". Smile

PensionPuzzle · 12/02/2024 15:53

If it's already called Oak Cottage but there are no oaks then how about something that reflects this, say Noke's Cottage (no oaks). I do agree with PP though that a name will reveal itself as you spend time there. As Spring comes you might find particular bulbs or wildlife in abundance, i don't think it has to be named for a particular tree.

NoOrdinaryMorning · 12/02/2024 17:25

That took me a while as I stupidly read deciduous as delicious 🤦‍♀️🙄

ani4ani · 12/02/2024 17:57

Tumbledown cottage
Four oaks cottage

Frith Wood. Frith is old English for sanctuary.

Ceceliaa · 12/02/2024 21:46

I don't have to decide now, I have owned it for two months but I think you're right about waiting to see what grows this year.

I now have a list of nice words which relate to the place somehow to think over though, thanks!

Frith always makes me think of Watershio Down
Perhaps there are rabbits in OP's wood.

Woodland management. Eeep. And here I was, aspiring, thinking you could just let stuff grow.

Oh I had forgotten about the Great God Frith, if there are rabbits it would be a double bubble on appropriateness. Also I must read Watership Down again.

SueBranchers · 13/02/2024 15:10

Is this a euphemism for a pregnancy? Assuming the stream refers to giving birth (water breaking) or perhaps the endless amount of tears you shed when you have children? I am rather confused.
