Hi everyone, what do you think of both names? Help us decide. We live in Bayern, Germany.

i’m bit biased for David but is it too common? That’s our concern.
And is Tobias a bit retro or?

I adore Tobias, whereas I find David a bit more common. I’m in the UK though, so trends will be different here.

NameChange30 · 11/02/2024 12:30

In the UK, David is a common name for men in their 60s.

Tobias (Toby) is more popular - although not overly so - for boys being born now.

Tobias was on my shortlist for DC1 (born in 2017). David is my dad's name!

Funkyslippers · 11/02/2024 12:31

Tobias is really nice as long as it's not shortened. David is a classic name, not so popular now but that's not a bad thing

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/02/2024 12:33

Tobias is lovely. I had a horrible boss called David, so can’t stand it 😁

TwoWithCurls · 11/02/2024 12:40

Love the name Tobias!

Onelife2024 · 11/02/2024 12:45

I love both names! I picked Tobias because it’s a great classic name that also sounds quite current and isn’t overused for any particular age group. I love the short version Toby, and I think it works well for a man as well as a child.

David is also a favourite of mine and is quite underused at the moment, but very commonly used in the general population. It is associated with the middle aged generation and older, but I think it’s going to come back into fashion and it’s a great classic.

I like Tobias as its not traditional

RedToothBrush · 11/02/2024 12:57

Dave. Baby Dave.
It's men in their 40's to 60's in the UK.

This is interesting! Don't remember the 2011 resurge (and I'm a teacher so often notice) but I wonder if it was David Beckham related?

siblingrevelryagain · 11/02/2024 12:58

David was my Dad’s name but it is very common/popular

Can’t hear Tobias without thinking of Arrested Development, but if you’re not a fan it doesn’t matter 😂

Dave. Baby Dave.
It's men in their 40's to 60's in the UK.

I was thinking he'd end up Dave too... until I remembered the aforementioned Beckham who is NEVER Dave!

peaceinourtime · 11/02/2024 14:34

Tobias will become a Toby naturally. Toby is a much better name anyway.

KirstenBlest · 11/02/2024 16:04

Tobias is Tob-ee-as and David is Da{r)vid, I think.

AgentPeña · 11/02/2024 16:05

I like Toby - it's got a lovely round, open sound which Tobias doesn't have.

David is fine, but boring

PickledScrump · 12/02/2024 05:54

In the UK Tobias is much more popular than David now. I don’t know any David’s under 30 but there’s 3 Tobias/Tobys just in my daughter’s year. I do like Tobias (when pronounced as tuh-by-as, not keen when pronounced as tuh-bee-as) but if you want something less common for babies then go for David

Justfinking · 12/02/2024 06:23

Tobias definitely. David is so boring and the name of someone 50+

wizzler · 12/02/2024 06:37

I love David. It's classic

user1492757084 · 12/02/2024 10:24

David is a perfect name to come back in usage.

Great meaning and history and it sounds handsome.

Tobias is fine. Toby is nicer and would be the every day name.

Toby is not as independent sounding as David or Dave. IMO

KirstenBlest · 12/02/2024 12:23

David is still popular @user1492757084 , Babies called David in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com).

The Davids registered probably include those whose parents might not be of British heritage (e.g French, German)
