What do you think about the name Arien for a boy?
we’re italian and in Italy it is uncommon but it has italian roots.
we live in the Netherlands and here Arjen is a common name.
So we like the idea to use Arien which easily sound like a dutch name

I am not really familiar with that name!
I hope someone else here can give you some opinions.

No. Sounds too much like “Aryan” and you have Germany on your border and lots of Germans vacation in the Netherlands.

I would shorten to Ari or go with Orion

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 03/02/2024 22:52

I agree, it sounds too similar to Aryan. Too many negative associations, I'm afraid.

Didn’t we already have this thread today?

Your perspective is interesting.
Here nor Arien neither Arjan, Ariana, Arianna would be associated with Aryan (also cause pronounciation is different)
I am wondering why in English speaking countries the association is so strong.
for instance, why Ariana , which is a common girl name in US , isn’t associated with Aryan? Here in EU, Ariana is the exact translation of Aryan (yet still a girl name Ariana would not be associated with the term Aryan)

How do you pronounce it?

Ema91 · 04/02/2024 09:05

Btw Arjen is a common dutch name in the NL. I met lots of Arjen here :)
Maybe I should ask them if they encountered problems or discriminations from others who made a bad association.
Thanks for your pov.

If you put “Arien” on google translator, select italian and use the “speaker “ feature, that’s how it would sound (actually not quite exactly but the A sound seems correct)

the e is pronounced like the e in the words “Hazel“, “Amen”, while the A like in “Adam”

Actually if you put “Arjen” on translator and use the speaker after selecting the italian language, that’s exactly how it sounds

Darien? (name of a city in Connecticut).

Arien sounds too much like Aryan...sorry.

theduchessofspork · 04/02/2024 10:14

If you’re Italian and in the Netherlands I don’t think it matters what English speaking mumsnetters think?!

Here it looks too close to Aryan, but of course it might not have those associations elsewhere.

KirstenBlest · 04/02/2024 10:56

Ariana is Italian for Aryan
The Dutch word for Aryan is Ariër

Strange that we have threads for Arian and Arien on the same day.

Ema91 · 04/02/2024 12:02

Right, i just wanted to get a first reaction on whether he could be bullied or judged by anyone in the english speaking community and understand how “close” it sounded.
Arien and Adam are on our list, with Arien being liked primarily by my partner….but we’ll decide later on :)
