Nick?

We are expecting our second baby (gender unknown) and have a long list of names! We both really like Nick for a boy, but do you think it has to be short for Nicholas/Nicolas? Or do you think I can just put Nick on the birth certificate?

In addition , any comments on the name would be appreciated (or similar suggestions! Criteria is international and short!)

Yes you can just put Nick! Many people have as their official name one that was once a shortened version of another.
I love the full name Nicholas though.

NWnature · 03/02/2024 09:49

I like Nick, also like Tom, Sam and Max.

Thank you! I wonder if we put Nicholas how often he’ll be called that if we put preferred name as Nick?

I like Nick, also like Tom, Sam and Max.

All such lovely names, have added to the list! Especially Max.

Nick is a great name! Love Nicholas too, but Nick on the birth certificate is fine!

I agree with pp suggestions of Sam, Max and Tom - love those names. Other nice short name ideas - Ben, John, Jack.

Rumpelslutskin · 03/02/2024 09:54

I think Nicolas on birth certificate is better as most people will assume it anyway particularly if they feel it's a shortening for friends and they are in a formal settings.

I am generally not a fan of nicknames as main, stand alone names because it sounds childish and overfamiliar.

Beetlewings · 03/02/2024 09:55

It's great but most people will assume he's a Nicholas anyway, get ready for him correcting everyone!

peaceinourtime · 03/02/2024 10:25

No it’s fine as you want to and intend to just call him Nick.

Enko · 03/02/2024 10:28

I prefer Nicholas

It's dhs name. I am the only person ever who uses Nicholas everyone else (bar the kids 😀) call him Nick.

I dont think it will be an issue.

Ooh useful to know! So socially everyone knows him as Nick and it’s just Nicholas on paperwork?

Nobody ever calls me the name on my birth certificate OP, just various shortened versions of it. I'm glad it's there though, if that makes sense. I grew up not to like my parents preferred shortening so now go by another version that having the long name allowed me to do.

Imagine Victoria, shortened first to Vicky, but now to Tor.

LenaLamont · 03/02/2024 10:32

@Bigearringsbigsmile my first thought too! Nick doesn’t mind if you barf in his car

That’s really helpful to know - I like the option of flexibility when older so perhaps Nicholas is the way to go!

I also have a Nicholas who is only ever known as Nick, except by his mother & me when he's being selectively deaf.

It's a great name!

Fair warning: He does get mistaken as 'Mick' a fair amount.

AFriendlyVouce · 03/02/2024 10:36

Personally I really like Nick without using Nicholas. You can put what you like on the birth cert!

I agree. We have a cousin Nick, who is Nicholas but always known as Nick.

CharlesChickens · 03/02/2024 10:39

I love Nick / Nicholas I think all the ones I have known have been great which helps.

Pacifybull · 03/02/2024 10:46

I would put Nicholas on the birth certificate. I much prefer fuller names officially.

jeremykylieminogue · 03/02/2024 10:56

I'd also put Nicholas on the birth certificate. Nicholas and Nick are lovely, but I think everyone will assume he's a Nicholas anyway and it gives him options when he's older.

Pushkinini · 03/02/2024 11:03

DB is Nicholas, known as Nick. He was Nicky as a small boy which is quite cute. Nicholas is definitely due a revival. There were lots when I was at school in the 80s, but I don't know any small Nicks.

Abouttimeforanamechange · 03/02/2024 11:15

It'll be up to him, won't it, as soon as he's old enough to have an opinion. I have a longer name. Some people call me by it, some people call me by different short forms. Some people vary between the full name and a short version.

I like Nicholas. I like classic names that have short or long versions - Nicholas, Christopher, Alexander.

If your name is Elizabeth on a BC and you're allowed to call yourself Lizzie.... then you are allowed call yourself Elizabeth if you have Lizzie on the BC!
Heck you can have Charlotte in the BC and call yourself Janice if you like...

There's no law to say you can't use the long version of you have a diminutive in your BC.

😕😕😕😕😕

BlueSofas · 03/02/2024 11:35

Thank you so much everyone, Nicholas (on the birth certificate) and Nick day to day is on the list!

I’d put Nicholas on the birth certificate personally - it’s such an elegant name

He’ll be called Nick if that’s what you want, but having a full name means he can use it if he wants it.
