Is it pretentious?

I would like it to be my next DD's name. It can be shortened to Betty which is very sweet IMO.

But Babette is a French name. We have no French connection, so to speak.

Will other kids rip the p*ss?

Sorry but I think they would!

I wouldn't use it in the UK. I wouldn't even use it in Belgium (although dh has a cousin with the name) as it's the sort of name that would suit some children fine, but not others.

If you like Betty then call her Betty (you could use Elizabeth on the birth cert). She will end up being called Babs.

Will the name suit if she grows up to be a president of a bank or a high court judge or something? (That is what I always think about really girly names anyway!)

exactly Buda! Very cute name for a new baby, but no one else!

I expect it will get shortened to Babs which is quite cool in a retro stylee. If you intend to call your daughter Betty then just call her Betty.

I have a neighbour called Babette (here in Germany). It never occurred to me that it was a daft name, or a non-adult name. She's a very sensible, serious 40 yo. I suppose you just become your name in a way.

It also depends what other names you have in your immediate family - if you're all Johns and Janes it may look a little out of place.

Dunno, just rambling really

Here in France, Babette is usually an abbreviation of Elisabeth.

SheherazadetheGoat · 21/03/2008 08:57

i like it but as castille says i think of it as a shortened pet name.
