Or other names similar. We like classic but not too popular. Surname is very basic- think “Smith”

Def Nina. Sadie has die and sad within it.

Workybeee · 01/02/2024 21:24

I really like both, but Sadie will always remind me of a bra shop near where I grew up called Sadie the Bra Lady! I can’t help but hear that every time I meet a little girl called Sadie.

That’s very niche though! Both great choices.

daisypond · 01/02/2024 21:25

Prefer Nina.
Sadie is OK.

Polly?
Sally?

ODFOx · 01/02/2024 21:28

If the names are very simple do not alliterate.
Just in case it really is Smith; Sadie Smith is drab. Without alliteration both names are fine. Pick whichever you prefer as to most people I'd say there's little between them. Some thoughts below. Congratulations 🎉

Sadie
Nina
Polly
Molly
Sukie
Eva
Cally
Tara
Lara
Lyra
Freya
Cally
Kira
Flora

Sadie

PoodlesRUs · 01/02/2024 22:07

Sadie feels morose

CharlesChickens · 01/02/2024 22:10

Sadie is the pet name for Sarah, if that bothers you. Nice name though. Nina I like too.

Nicebloomers · 01/02/2024 22:47

Sadie. Also liked a previous post suggestion of Nancy

WetBandits · 02/02/2024 00:05

Nina.

I know four Sadies…only one of them is human, the rest are golden retrievers!

adriftinadenofvipers · 02/02/2024 00:07

Well if it helps, we considered both Sadie and Nina for one of our cats. We went with Sadie! I also have a second cousin Sadie who must be in her 70s!

vanillaspice235 · 02/02/2024 00:47

Nina

My thoughts exactly!!

I'm so glad I'm not the only person who sees this and this is my reasoning for never using it!

Haha

Same here - looks like sad and die, and sounds like sadist! Not a fan. Nina is fabulous though.

I don't see that at all, otherwise I would never have given the name to our DCat!!!!

Made me laugh! @Workybeee

Thanks all- seems a relatively even split!

Love some of the suggestions but for various reasons (mostly friends and family use) the majority have been vetoed. I really liked Rose, Anna, Lucy and Emily. Also like Iris and Lily. My husband prefers something a bit more unusual like Nina/ Sadie.

Neither would be alliteration with our surname. Perhaps I just wait it out til baby is here and see if seem to suit either. Reluctant to discuss with friends / family beforehand.

Actually don’t know if we are having a boy or girl but I think we are reasonably set on Arthur or Alexander for a boy.

Thanks for the help!!

Nina.

There aren't many names I truly dislike, but Sadie always strikes me as a rough, hard-faced name.

Same

eachmorningiwakeup · 02/02/2024 15:43

I have a Nina so I am biased, but I adore Sadie too! Great choices.

I disagree with the previous poster who says Nina is not a classic name (not that it matters.) The Queen Mother's mother's name was Cecilia Nina and sometimes it's just listed as Nina so I wonder if that's what she went by. In the US, it peaked in the 1890s, and not as a nickname for anything.

I have to ask the pronunciation you'd be using for Nina. I've ever known it to be 'like nee-na' but recently I worked with someone who used 'nine-na' 🤯 took me a few days to realise she was 'Nina' and not someone else 😂

Amazinggrace89 · 02/02/2024 23:05

Love both
id probably go with Sadie but I do love Nina too

NWnature · 03/02/2024 09:42

@jhy oh really! I think definitely nee-nah

@eachmorningiwakeup interesting! Thanks for this.

I think I am maybe leaning a tiny bit more towards Nina but Sadie sounds sweeter with the middle name. I don’t have the “sad/ die/ sadist” connotations obviously - and actually think it sounds quite soft in the mouth - more than Nina in fact. Most recently came across Sadie in the Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow novel and also love the other title character Sam for a boy.

Maybe it will be glaringly obvious when we see the baby!

You’ve got two gorgeous name ideas and so it’s a great idea to wait until she’s born to decide. I did that with my second girl as I was torn between two names - I knew as soon as I saw her which one she was.

Wheresmykitten · 03/02/2024 09:51

Sadie is lovely. Nina sounds like a wimp/wet lettuce for some reason. Really dislike it!
