How do feel about having a long name?

Do you go by a diminutive form of your name?

Did the length of your name influence the names you gave to your kids?

I have 4 syllables, rarely shortened. DH has 1 syllable and remembers it being lengthened by a -y in primary sometimes - which he didn't like. Surname is 1 syllable, our children's names are 3 and 4 syllables, they only sometimes use shortened forms as teens.

Holidayhell22 · 31/01/2024 18:47

I like my name.
I wanted long names for my dcs too.

AnnaDomini · 31/01/2024 18:52

I didn't like it growing up. Most of my friends had 2 syllable names. My long name seemed frumpy and old-fashioned.

I go by a diminutive now but more by accident than choice.

DC were given much shorter names.

I hate my middle name and always have. It's a name that was trendy when I was born. The name is OK but it just seems a bit random.

My middle name comes before my first name, and I would not recommend doing that to a child.

JeremiahJohnson · 31/01/2024 19:01

I have 4 syllables. Never answer to any diminutive, they aren’t my name.
My children have 3 syllable names, none have issue with them and only one has a 1 syllable diminutive that we weren’t expecting to use but often do.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 31/01/2024 19:18

I have 3 syllables
always get shortened, which I really dislike
DD is also three syllables, Dp really wanted that name, I wanted a shorter name that wouldn’t get shortened.
i call her all three syllables, everyone else shortens it to one.

cheapskatemum · 31/01/2024 19:34

3 syllable 1st name, never used a shortened form of it. Both maiden & married surnames also have 3 syllables. It's never bothered me except when I keep having to type out my email address (work email obeys a formula & needs whole name).

DSs 1-4 all have 1 or 2 syllable names with 4 or 5 letters though. I think I was looking ahead to Christmas card writing there!

Lastminutebride · 31/01/2024 19:37

My names 2 syllables and doesn’t get shortened
DD’s names are 4 and 2 syllables and Borge get shorted to 1 syllable names

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 31/01/2024 22:16

I have three syllables but use two.

HelenHywater · 31/01/2024 22:33

mine is 4 syllables - not shortened, although was in my teenage years.

3 of my dds have4 syllable names (I wanted long names for them too) - all are currently shortened (not by me, in their teenage years). I hope they reclaim their full names when they aren't teens!

renthead · 03/02/2024 07:43

I have a theory that if you have a three syllable name with the stress on the first syllable, it will have a good chance of being shortened to just that first syllable. Both my DD and I have this.

Examples:
Jessica- Jess
Jennifer- Jen

PaddingtonsHat · 03/02/2024 07:47

I have 3 syllables. I never go by the shortened version- I’ve always just told people I don’t like the short version if they tried to use it.
My children have 2 syllable names but because I like the names rather than the length of them.

DannyKin · 03/02/2024 07:52

I think it depends on your surname. I have 3 syllables and my surname had 3 too. I used to have a job where I often had to make phonecalls and introduce myself and it just felt like too much name! My married surname only has 2 syllables and I've kept it even after divorce because the total 5 syllables name just feels so much more comfortable! My children have 2 and 1 syllables names.

fgscat · 03/02/2024 07:53

3 syllables and most people use the first two, which is what I prefer as the full version is v dated and largely dated to people 10 or so years older than me! I don't really mind the full name that much though and get called it a lot by external people at work because it's in my email signature, despite me writing

Best wishes

I’ve got a really long surname and we are double barrelled so I didn’t give my daughter a middle name cos of it. Just seemed excessive!

fgscat · 03/02/2024 07:55

And I gave all 3 kids 2 syllable names which shorten brilliantly for ds2 (Joe) ok for ds1 (Ev), awful for dd (sylv)

CadyEastman · 03/02/2024 07:56

I've got a 3 syllable name and only go by the shortened version with close family or close friends. DD also has a 3 syllable name and only ever goes by the shortened version. You can't predict what your DC will choose.

One of my DCousin has a very short, one syllable name as my DAunt wanted to give them a name that couldn't be shortened. Everyone lengthens it instead! Grin

ColdButSunny · 03/02/2024 07:56

My name is 3 syllables but my nickname (used by everyone) is 2 syllables.

My DC's names have 1, 2 and 4 syllables!

Mylobsterteapot · 03/02/2024 07:57

4 syllables in my name, almost everyone uses a one syllable shortening. My family call me by the whole thing, and a small specific group use a two syllable shortening. I introduce myself as the one syllable in most situations.
It doesn’t help that I have long last name as well.
I don’t have children yet, but I wish my known as name started with the same letter as my real name. It’s annoying for work emails, work initials which are used a lot and a few other things.

DesertSnow · 03/02/2024 09:39

My name is 3 syllables, I go by a one syllable nickname. DH is also 3 syllables. We went for a short, simpler name that doesn't really get abbreviated for our DD. We don't mind our names, but they do get misheard/mispronounced a fair bit, and we didn't want that for our daughter.
