I like Ruth. I actually think of it as a cool name. I like Winnie as a name but not winifred.

theduchessofspork · 30/01/2024 19:54

I don’t love any of them - but Winifred would be my top choice - I like Winnie, Freda and and Freddie as short forms

Fern is perfectly nice, quite popular

I think Ruth is the ugliest girls’ name - like an aggressive dog barking. Sorry to be so blunt..

PerpetualChaos · 30/01/2024 19:59

Winifred is just awful. I bet most people on here who say they like it, wouldn't want to be called that.
Ruth or Fern are far better.

GrandDuchessOfBillericay · 30/01/2024 20:05

Fern or Fearne for me.

Doublebiscuit77 · 30/01/2024 20:37

I've met a little Winifred and a little Ruth. I think i slightly prefer Ruth although i don't love it. Winifred makes me think of Thursday's wife in Endeavour - he always called her Win which is quite nice.

I actually think Fern is the most dated, and I don't love the 'er' sound.

ButtonMoonBlanketSky · 30/01/2024 20:38

Fern - it's a beautiful name.

Mumofgirls2017 · 30/01/2024 21:11

Winifred nn Winnie :)

RuthW · 30/01/2024 21:44

Fearne.

Please not Ruth.

motleymop · 30/01/2024 21:47

Similar to others, Fern would be my choice out of these three. Definitely not Winifred.

OopsieeDaisy · 30/01/2024 22:18

Definitely Fern out of the three. Really dislike both Winifred and Ruth.

FünfundvierzigLuftballons · 30/01/2024 22:20

I really like Ruth. Not frilly, not too common, classic. Makes me think of a clever little girl.

puddingandsun · 30/01/2024 22:23

Winnifred - sounds like a witches name
Fern - imo, dated and boring
Ruth - imo, harsh sounding and dated

BewareTheBlob · 30/01/2024 19:17

I'm not particularly keen on any I'm afraid. Winifred is rather clunky, Ruth has a dry quality that evokes the feeling of felt or cotton balls rubbed against teeth. Fern is like unseasoned chicken. Writing this I'm realising I have an irrational aversion to names containing "th" or "f" so take my opinion with a pinch of salt.

Unseasoned chicken 🤣 do you have synaesthesia by any chance?

BewareTheBlob · 30/01/2024 22:33

@salamithumbs Idk, i have wondered but i don't think so as I've read about it and my own experiences don't align with the definition. I have a few odd things like synthetic coconut smells painful.

TempleOfBloom · 30/01/2024 22:34

I worked with a very cool young woman called Winnie recently. I like Winifred. Win, Winnie, Freddie, Fred, Freda..

BewareTheBlob · 30/01/2024 22:34

Or smells like pain.

SushiSushi · 30/01/2024 22:38

I think Fern is pretty.

bravotango · 30/01/2024 22:38

Ruth! I prefer Elfrid to Winifred if it's Freddie you're after (fab NN)

Pumpkindoodles · 30/01/2024 22:41

Not fern, it’s boring and not the same vibe as the other two
love Ruth and Winifred

salamithumbs · 30/01/2024 22:48

@BewareTheBlob ah ok, I've wondered about it myself. For me Ruth is very much raw carrot

Starrysky812 · 30/01/2024 22:49

Lovely and unusual choices. I think Winnie is super cute (Winne Cooper, the wonder years 😊). My sister is Ruth and she's always been Ruthie to family which is also very cute for a little one! Less keen on Fern (although it's a nice name) just because it's a bit more popular and I prefer more unique names xx

lioneggs · 30/01/2024 22:51

Fern first then Winifred but really dislike Ruth

ODFOx · 30/01/2024 22:51

Winnifred and Ruth are both equally lovely.
Fern is ok but the third of the three I think.

newname67 · 30/01/2024 22:58

Fern is my favourite.

I don't like Winifred at all, what about Winona?

Daisybuttercup12345 · 30/01/2024 23:02

Not Ruth.
Winifred OK.
Fern a bit meh.
