Boy name alternatives to Charlie

Hi all, I'm currently in my third trimester and trying to find a name that I love for our baby boy. The name that currently stands out most to me and DH is Charlie, but I'm not 100% sure as we don't like the name Charles.

Does anyone have any good suggestions?

I generally like names that are fairly traditional, but not biblical, and particularly love names that link to nature. Other names we are considering include:
Albie
Arthur (shortened to Artie)
Milo
Robin
Rory
Rowan
Wilfred

Not what you are asking but the Charlie I know gets shortened to Charles.

My DS has a dog called Charlie and he is often called Charles - normally in a stern voice accompanied with a hard stare.

Also not helpful, apologies!

Just Charlie is fine. It's more popular by far than Charles.

Not keen on your others. Robin and Rowan are ok but disappear into all the Roman and Reuben type names

I've never known a Charlie to get called Charles unless that's their birth certificate name and the parents use both interchangeably.

If you like Charlie, I see no reason why he wouldn't just be Charlie.

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 30/01/2024 12:48

I knew someone called Charlton and was known as Charlie

NewYearNewMeMamma · 30/01/2024 12:50

My little boy is called Charlie. I've never called him Charles, nor has anyone else.

NachosAndCheese · 30/01/2024 13:07

I don’t know any Charlie’s that are actually Charles. It’s a really popular name.

I like Milo and Wilfred but not keen on the others.

Charlie is a lovely friendly name.

Onelife2024 · 30/01/2024 13:19

My favourite from your names shortlist is Charlie - as pp’s have said, it can be a standalone name rather than Charles.

I also like Robin and Rory from your list.

Albie, Rowan and Milo are nice but maybe a little trendier than my usual taste (so it’s hard to know at the moment how well they will date, if that matters to you).

Arthur and Wilfred have got that nice old school vibe that I usually like but I haven’t quite got used to hearing them used with the new generation yet -but they are definitely coming back into fashion and will probably grow on me!

Other suggestions -

George
Alexander
Freddie
Edward
Henry
Harry
Max
Oscar
Oliver
Jack
Sebastian
Leo

Love Rowan and Arthur. I think Charlie is fine as a full name if you’re not a fan of Charles. Other suggestions

archie
toby
theo
vinnie
ronnie
bobby
tommy
billy
leon
teddy
freddie
frankie
finley
george
liam
harry

Charlie stands the test of time. For me, Freddie doesn't sound like a man's name, neither does Archie.

sunflowerpinks · 30/01/2024 16:51

Everyone will assume that a Charlie is a Charles.

Just like an Eddie is generally Edward and Mike is Michael.

sunflowerpinks · 30/01/2024 16:53

Personally I feel that the current cutesy name trend (Teddie, Freddie, Alfie, Billie etc) will soon start to sound dated as this trend falls out of fashion.

I'd always use the full name
