My husband is desperate to call our baby boy Ezra but I’m honestly not sure on it.
We had kind of decided on Reuben but he is trying his best to persuade me Ezra is better.

which would you choose Ezra or Reuben?

Both are good names, you can't go wrong.

Reuben. One at my school. Never gets called Reuby. Ezra is a surname and he’ll get all the George Ezra comments.

Edited

Ezra is his middle name, they are a Jewish family

MaloneMeadow · 30/01/2024 02:16

Ezra used to be cool and unique but now it’s overdone and try-hard. Reuben is far nicer and classier

DramaAlpaca · 30/01/2024 03:02

Of the two, Reuben.

But, tbh, I don't like either of them, but at least you can give Reuben the diminutive Ben, which is nice enough.

StrongandNorthern · 30/01/2024 03:09

Absolutely love Ezra! Go for it.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 30/01/2024 03:16

Reuben is far nicer than Ezra

LauderSyme · 30/01/2024 03:17

I like Ezra more out of the two, I think it's a lovely strong name.

I think I got sightly tired of Reuben - it seemed to become ubiquitous all of a sudden.

Does anyone get named Peter these days? 😂

I know a couple of teens/early 20s but not younger. Then again, me and my friendship group are well past the baby stage (and not quite old enough for grandmahood!) so not much exposure to babies/young children.

Always struck me as a classic but was outside the top 100 when I last looked.

ConcertaFirstTimer · 30/01/2024 07:24

Both great names but I love Ezra more.

KirstenBlest · 30/01/2024 07:26

@43ontherocksporfavor , I know a teenage one.

Not keen on Ezra or Reuben. Ez or Reub?

Wrongsideofpennines · 30/01/2024 07:29

Both are good. Ezra is very popular around me. We would have used it as we are very much into Biblical name but it was a bit too common for us. Reuben was on our list but wouldn't work with our surname.

I only know teen and older of Peters. I think it might come back though as Biblical names are big.

Vladandnikki · 30/01/2024 07:34

I prefer Reuben, but it might just be because I associate Ezra with Ezra Miller and he is awful.

boomingaround · 30/01/2024 09:22

Ezra a bit too trendy for me. I'm actually not keen on Reuben either- has a weird harsh sort of middle aged sound to me. But it's more classic than Ezra.

Newgolddream70 · 30/01/2024 09:26

I love Ezra. I don't think of George Ezra though - I think of John Mills' character in The Family Way which is a great film from 1966!

JanuarySlog · 30/01/2024 09:33

I really like both names, however I know an Ezra that I don't particularly like and that's put me off! I loved it before I met him though.

Multipleexclamationmarks · 30/01/2024 09:37

Ezra is a bit too trendy for me atm. It's like that other thread - does your name date when you were born.
Reuben is nicer imo.

Winterstars · 30/01/2024 09:38

It is popular, there seem to be a lot of Old Testament names that are gaining popularity like Noah, Ezra, Jonah and so on! While Stephen, Paul and others are declining. It’s interesting.

I prefer Reuben but have you considered Benjamin? It’s also Old Testament but I don’t think it will date whereas the others will a bit.

KirstenBlest · 30/01/2024 09:53

@Winterstars , in my age group it was the New Testament names that were popular - John, Paul, Mark, Andrew, Stephen, James, Matthew, Simon.
Of the Old Testament, there was the odd Sam, Dan, Adam, Aaron, a few Michaels and Jonathans and lots of Davids.

Now it's names like Reuben, Noah, Gabriel, Ezra, Ezekiel, Micah, Levi, Jonah, Jude, Zachary, Raphael, Jeremiah, Hosiah, Elijah, Elias, Eli...

KirstenBlest · 30/01/2024 10:01

I forgot Benjamin, Jacob and Joshua. Not many in my age group but know many a bit younger than me.

Winterstars · 30/01/2024 10:03

Yes, when I was at school the boys were David, Stephen, Paul, Matthew, Mark. Girls were mostly Sarah and Rebecca from the Bible. Now boys are Noah, Ezra, Jude and so on. Not sure about girls although I know a couple of girls called Martha. Thomas seems to have been fairly steadily popular. That was my choice if DD was a boy.

KirstenBlest · 30/01/2024 10:15

I forgot Tom. There weren't many at school but a lot had it as a middle name.
Girls were Sarah, Susan, Ruth, Rebecca, Rachel, Elizabeth, Ann, Mary.

Doublebiscuit77 · 30/01/2024 13:29

Of the two I prefer Ezra, but neither are to my taste - both very popular as well if that bothers you.

bakewellbride · 30/01/2024 13:40

Both are ok but I prefer Reuben.

Samzzz · 30/01/2024 19:38

My DS is Ezra and I love his name. I named him when Ezra was fairly uncommon…. It’s becoming very popular now which does upset me a bit. But still a beautiful name.
