Phoebe or Celia

Interested to hear any angles I haven't thought of! Celia - would be Cece I expect for a nickname, I think it works well as an older person but more dated for a child (but would predominantly used nn). Phoebe I think more modern, also a bit more common - might end up being Fifi which I'm not so sure about? Surname is quite long so not looking for anything longer.

These were both on my short list! Celia is my favourite by a whisker.

I think it is mine, too!! What else was on your shortlist if you don't mind sharing (you clearly have good taste ;) )

Phoebe sounds kinder and cooler

Celia sounds more harsh and strict

Thequeenofwishfulthinking · 29/01/2024 09:33

Love Phoebe.
I prefer Cecilia to Celia.

HoorayForRain · 29/01/2024 09:34

Haha thank you :) I had: Elowyn, Chloe, Megan, Althea, Robin, Sadie, Selena and Juno on my short list.

TheSandgroper · 29/01/2024 10:01

Celia. Not seen so often and feminine.

And I don’t see how you can call Phoebe modern when it comes from Ancient Greece so it’s been around for a while.

Onelife2024 · 29/01/2024 10:09

I like both. I slightly prefer Celia and don’t know whether it needs to be shortened, as although it’s 3 syllables it flows quickly and easily as a full name. I actually think Cece is nice for a young child but not what I’d like to be called as a teen or adult. Phoebe has the advantage of being 2 syllables, so she might get Fi or Phoebs as affectionate nn but not as a rule.

OctaviaRedQueen · 29/01/2024 10:21

I prefer Phoebe between the two, however, I actually prefer Cecily to Phoebe.

I like CeCe as a nickname but with Phoebe she can be BeBe.

And like @TheSandgroper said, Phoebe is most definitely not a modern name!

Doublebiscuit77 · 29/01/2024 10:24

I prefer Cecilia or Cecily, but Celia is still nice. I really like Phoebe, i don't think it would be Fifi unless you pushed it. More likely Phoebs as a teenager.

Lorelaigilless · 29/01/2024 10:27

Much prefer Phoebe. All the Celia, Cecelia, Cecily names don’t have a nice meaning if that’s something that you’re into.

BobbidyBibbidyBob · 29/01/2024 10:42

Thanks all. I meant modern as in more common in contemporary culture and sits a bit easier / "cooler"- eg Phoebe in friends. Phoebe Waller-Bridge etc.. it sounds a bit more modern than Celia.

Phoebe. Celia's fine but Cece is awful

StartupRepair · 29/01/2024 10:49

My dd (22) is Celia. She is fab! Family nickname Celie.

I love Celia and wouldn’t shorten it.

VoleChomper · 29/01/2024 11:38

To me Celia is mega-frumpy.

VoleChomper · 29/01/2024 11:39

I like Phoebe though.

Lionbros · 29/01/2024 12:23

I know a Celia who is normally just Celia but also called C.

I do prefer Phoebe but Celia is a nice name too. The Phoebe I know goes by Bea as a nickname.
I love Cecily as pp suggested

NachosAndCheese · 29/01/2024 13:10

Phoebe is nice but mega popular.

Cant say I love Celia, prefer Delia or Delilah or Cecelia.

Strugglingtodomybest · 29/01/2024 13:13

Definitely Phoebe for me, I can't stand Celia for some reason, and Cecelia is even worse.

theduchessofspork · 29/01/2024 15:55

Celia - it’s v nice, but not beautiful the way Cecilia is for some reason.

I like Selina better if that’s of any interest. Or Serena?

Phoebe is nice too, but there are an increasing number, and also Pheeeeebs!

VivaVivaa · 29/01/2024 16:01

Both are lovely. I would however chose Celia. I just prefer it and Phoebe is becoming quite common - know of 3 in the last year.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 29/01/2024 19:34

Not keen on Celia but like Phoebe
