I think Lillian works fine because the stress is on the "lil" not the "an" part.

Doppelgangers · 24/01/2024 06:57

I wouldn't as you could well end up with 2 kids who wish to go by essentially the name Ann(a). It also seems incredibly unimaginative for your poor second born to be essentially named after her big sister.

DustyLee123 · 24/01/2024 06:57

I like Marianne

CanaryMary · 24/01/2024 07:01

Argh I obviously have a taste! Just love the names! Still time to see if any other ideas come up!

Lillian as someone else said the lil is the emphasis

Nicebloomers · 24/01/2024 07:25

Variations without the Ann/a

Lillith
Leona
mirian/ Maeve/ Marnie
Mariette
Marguerite
Rosaline/ Rosalie

A few extra that would be nice with sibling Anabel:

Genevieve
Otillie
Saskia
Noemi
Camille
Madeleine
Beatrice

Monkeytapper · 24/01/2024 08:03

Rosa

Onelife2024 · 24/01/2024 08:17

I don’t think it matters because the names you like aren’t generally shortened to Anne. My favourite from your list is Roseanne - it goes beautifully with Annabel and gets shortened to Rosie / Rose. Annie and Rosie is a lovely combination!
The others are nice too - particularly Lilian or Marianne, which will be most likely shortened to Lily / Lil and Mari / Marnie / Maria - none of which sound like Anne.
Personally I think it’s more important to choose a name you love than to worry about how the names sound together.

I would try to not be too alike.

Annabel - Ann, Annie, Anna, Bel, Bels and ..

Rosalba
Rosalind
Rosemary
Vivienne
Adrienne
Victoria
Lilian - Lily
Mariella
Marion or Marian
Marianne - most likely won't be called Ann
Mary-Ellen
Mary-Louise
Leah
Leanne - most likely won't be called Ann
Roseann - Rosie.
It will be a tongue twister to say Roseann and Annabel more so than Annabel and Roseann.

KirstenBlest · 25/01/2024 08:00

Lillian - no Ann (LIL-yun)
Marianne - Marry-ANN
Leanne - lee-ANN
Roseanne - Rose-ANN

Leanne and Roseanne seem very dated.
Marianna is too long and IMO awful. Mariella is nice.
Rosanna is pretty.

MaloneMeadow · 25/01/2024 13:40

Lillian is nice, the rest are awful and should be (rightly!) left in the 80s!

ProperOuting · 25/01/2024 19:56

Just throwing out some names I think you might like.
I think of Annabel as a popular 'Victorian' style name so how about:
Iris
Charlotte
Catherine
Audrey
Alexandra
Florence
Juliette
Harriet
Alice

More modern ones I think have the same flavour or just go are:
Delphine
Adele
Ilaria
Sadie
Iona
Aubrey
Elise
Phoebe
Saffron
Sienna
Cassia

BoohooWoohoo · 25/01/2024 20:02

Lilian is pronounced Lily-un in my accent so not an “Anne” name imo. It would probably be shortened to Lily rather than Anne
Do you like Marian rather than Marianne because that’s an “un” rather than “Anne” name ? Miriam is a similar vibe and not an “Anne” name

KirstenBlest · 25/01/2024 20:09

Maybe you are focusing on 'A name that doesn't have Ann in it' **

How about a completely different name, maybe Abigail, Beatrice, Felicity, Georgina, Harriet, Jessica or Victoria?

** A bit like if you're cycling and you see a pothole, you need to not focus on the pothole or you are drawn to it.

Frizzwald · 25/01/2024 20:14

What about Lilia? It sounds really good with Annabel but no Ann and much nicer than Lilian

theduchessofspork · 25/01/2024 20:30

Lillian is ok because it’s pronounced LIL-ee-un

The rest of them have a proper Anne sound so no you can’t

Marian/Marion rather than Marianne you could because it also ends with un

How about Maria, Marina, Madeleine, Leonora, Leonie, Rosalind, Rosamund, Rosemary, Rosaria, Rose, Rosa..

Cecile, Genevieve, Caroline, Adeline, Vivienne, Emmeline all have a bit of a Marianne (ie French) vibe to me

Allegra, Serena, Saskia, Cassia, Estella, Miranda, Philippa (Pippa), Felicity, Cecily, Viola, Flora, Lara, Verity all have a similarly light musical feel to Rosanna (to me anyway!)

Whatdoy · 25/01/2024 23:23

Most people pronounce Lilian more like lily-un rather than lily-an, so I think it would be fine (and a nice name)

CanaryMary · 27/01/2024 20:09

Ooh thank you have some good suggestions there! I really like a few of these!

esp Genevieve, Vivienne, marietta and Rosalind

we tend to call our Annabel Bel for nn
I still like Lilian but would use Lil nn
or maybe I can use Lily as a mn
