Planning our favourite baby names for each sex. What do you think of these two and, assuming we had one of each, would they work as a sibling set? What's the overall vibe?

I LOVE Zelda and Wilfred is lovely too.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 23/01/2024 22:24

I like them both, though I prefer Alfred to Wilfred.

Myglassishalffullish · 23/01/2024 22:29

Great…. For cats 🥴

RaininSummer · 23/01/2024 22:39

I thought they were names for guinea pigs at first but i actually quite like them.

Wilfred sounds quite charmingly old fashioned- I wouldn’t be brave enough to use it but I don’t dislike it.

Zelda sounds mythical and trendy - again I don’t think I’d use it myself but it’s fine. It’s got a different feel to Wilfred to me.

This.

PamelaParis · 23/01/2024 22:55

Vibe is should have got dogs instead.

PiggieWig · 23/01/2024 22:57

Wilfred - nice enough but Boris Johnson put me off.

Zelda - Nintendo

Wibur?

Zoe? Zara?

Takeitinturns · 23/01/2024 23:24

I think the vibe works, perhaps not in a transitional sense where Wilfred might be paired with Mary and Zelda with Scott but in that they would both be chosen in 2024 by contemporary, artsy upper middle classes. Plus there is the added bonus of the sharing of syllables and letters (l and d) which leads to complementary sounds.

Ropeonasoap · 23/01/2024 23:28

Wilfred is a lovely name but completely ruined by Boris Johnson.

Zelda is a great name for a dog.

Nestofwalnuts · 23/01/2024 23:31

I love both those names and think they go together very well Stylish, literary early 20th century names.

Makes me think of Wilfred Owen and Zelda Fitzgerald.

littlemousebigcheese · 24/01/2024 01:39

@FuglySweaty sorry, I shouldn't have assumed you didn't know! It just drives me mad when people think he's Zelda and I know I'm irrational and ridiculous 😂

Dotchange · 24/01/2024 01:43

Ugh

BasiliskStare · 24/01/2024 01:48

I always laugh when I hear Victoria Coren and David Mitchell have called their daughters Barbara and June - so old fashioned , not trendy but rather lovely.

I would also think of Zelda Fitzgerald not I think a happy woman - Wilfred I agree with a PP probably more fashionable owing to Boris.

Meeko505 · 24/01/2024 08:59

Thanks for opinions everyone! Wilfred is my choice and a family name, so I'm not picking it because of Boris! It was my great grandfather's name.

Zelda is my partner's choice and while it's not at the top of my list - I prefer Aoife - I think I'm willing to work with it because of the 1920s vibe I get. He does like it because of the video games though.

Zelda is lovely. Wilfred was my great uncle’s name - he didn’t like it as a child and changed it when he grew up.

Cheepcheepcheep · 24/01/2024 14:24

Interesting that people are thinking the Boris connection re Wilfred being more popular now. DD was going to be Wilfred or Bryony depending on sex and Boris Johnson named his child about 2 months before she arrived and I was devastated 😂 was a slight relief as a result when she was a girl. Wilf turned up 2 years later and I was assiduously tracking the ONS stats to see if the needle had moved (in either direction) as a result - it’s actually remained fairly static for the last 5 years so I wouldn’t say it’s had a significant impact, and no one mentioned Boris when we announced his name.

Riverlee · 24/01/2024 15:22

I discounted Leo as Tony Blair named his son Leo around the time I was pregnant. Love the name we chose, but have slight name regret that I rejected the name so quickly. It’s not increased in popularity, or undesirability.

Twenty years on, most people have forgotten that Tony Blair’s son is called Leo, and I imagine the same would be the same for Boris’s son (unless he lives his life in the limelight).

Blindingsunlight · 24/01/2024 15:25

There are so many Wilfreds it's really not a name that will become associated with one person. It's not like all Andrews are associated with Prince Andrew (thank God).

Myotherusernamesafunnyone · 24/01/2024 16:58

Wilfred lovely
Zelda terrible
They don't go together at all

miniaturepixieonacid · 25/01/2024 23:12

VoleChomper · 23/01/2024 20:40

I like Zelda. I know she didn't have the happiest of lives but I think of Zelda Fitzgerald and 1920s literature and glamour and excess.

Wilfred isn't into excess. He spends all his free time in his potting shed with a Thermos and a nice dunking biscuit.

😂😂Perfect analysis!

But I quite like both names. Just wouldn't use them together.

New2024 · 25/01/2024 23:20

Boris has a Wilfred - that puts me off the name

ElfRiot · 25/02/2024 15:41

We're likely to name our boy Wilfred. It's not my favourite, but my wife loves it, and I've not got another favourite. I also quite like the flexibility of Wilf/Will/Fred/Freddie/Bill. Etc.

What I would add to all those who wouldn't use it because of Boris is that A. Nobody will care. Like at all... And B. His other sons are called Theo and Milo. Are they also off limits?

I get not calling them Boris, but I just don't think Wilfred will feature enough in daily life for people to care. Anyone who does should have the good sense to keep quiet anyway.

theduchessofspork · 25/02/2024 17:31

They do sound like a sorcery practising brother and sister.

I quite like both, Wilfred may end up Will though, which you might feel is a bit pedestrian for you

BCBird · 25/02/2024 17:33

I don't like either of them OP, sorry.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 25/02/2024 17:37

Sorry, I hate both! But if you love them, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks!
