Adeline or Arabella

I am currently 33 weeks pregnant and really struggling to commit to a name for my little girl.

we have a son called Fletcher and we knew his name instantly whereas this time round I keep swaying between Adeline and Arabella.

My husband and I both loved Adeline even before we conceived. We love longer names that you can shorten (Fletcher to Fletch/Fletchie) and would probably shorten Adeline to Della. Recently we threw Arabella in the mix which I also love but my Husband isn’t keen on the nickname Bella.

please could you share your opinion… Adeline or Arabella? Plus include any nicknames that you can think of for both plus middle names would be appreciated as that is also a tricky subject 🙃 surname is two syllables.

thank you! X

Adeline and Addy

I don't love Arabelle but I would nickname Ella or Ara.

Adeline gets my vote - a beautiful name - She’s got nn options of Della / Dell / Ade / Adie / Lina as she grows up. middle names - 4 syllables starting with a vowel sounds nice -
Adeline Arabella is gorgeous!
Adeline Olivia
Adeline Elizabeth

Arabella sounds a bit pretentious to me as a first name but I’m sure I’d warm up to it if I knew little ones with that name - so it might sound nice where you live. I’m not so keen on the Bella nn.

I think Arabella is prettier. Abbie or Abbey can be used for short, as well as Bella. Or Ari I suppose.

I am not so familiar with Adeline and I keep thinking of adenoids, although I realise that is probably ridiculous, as everything can sound like something else. Don't know why I don't like it - I love Madeline for instance, which is only one letter different! Is it pronounced Add-uh-lin, Add-uh-leen, or Add-uh-lyne (to rhyme with wine)?

DuchessOfSausage · 22/01/2024 09:27

I don't like Adeline at all. Just Della is much nicer.
Arabella is pretty but it's a bit long and frilly.

I like Madeleine but don't like Maddy.

HeddaGarbled · 22/01/2024 09:30

I love both Adeline and Della for short.

theduchessofspork · 22/01/2024 09:42

I like them both..

Arabella can be Ari, Ella or Ellie

Adeline - Ada or Lina (Delia is a different name and not any shorter so you might as well call her that if you like it).

Or.. if you like Delia but want to use it as a shortening then call her Cordelia as a full name, which also gives you the option of Cordy

Adeline nn Addy

HuntingoftheSnark · 23/01/2024 06:24

I think Arabella is infinitely nicer. If you don't like Bella then, as a PP suggested, Ella as a nickname?

Babyblackbear78 · 23/01/2024 06:29

I prefer Arabella with Ella or Elle as a nn

Ellmau · 23/01/2024 07:40

I prefer Arabella. You could call her Ari for short. Or... what about Ariane, which has elements of both the names you like?

I don't see Della as an obvious short for Adeline.

MNs: Arabella Joy or Adeline Rose.

smooshraspberry · 23/01/2024 07:48

Della is taken from the Ages of Adaline. If you like Della, call her Della.

DuchessOfSausage · 23/01/2024 10:01

@theduchessofspork , OP did not mention Delia.
