Testing Héloïse

Esmee44 · 15/01/2024 16:55

Hi,
I am due in March and I want to test out the name my partner and I have picked to see reactions and/or possible issues, without telling friends and family. Note that we live in a predominantly French speaking area, speak both English and French at home, and our child will be attending French daycare and school, but some of our friends and family speak more English, so any name needs to be bilingual.
The name we have picked is Héloïse … thoughts?

Lovely name.

LlynTegid · 15/01/2024 17:01

Lovely name but will your DD have to spend a lifetime spelling it out?

SadSack10 · 15/01/2024 17:01

Is it pronounced Hellouise?

AfterTheSummer · 15/01/2024 17:03

Lovely name. I suspect most English speakers will pronounce it as Eloise.

Alloveragain3 · 15/01/2024 17:04

Lovely.

I'd be unsure if it's pronounced Hel-oh-ees or El-oh-ees but would only need to be told once.

Crochetablanket · 15/01/2024 17:04

I think it’s lovely but would think that a lot of time you (and your child when older ) would spend time spelling it out, also would people mis hear as Eloise?
Would you like Eloise instead?

Overthebow · 15/01/2024 17:05

I’m not sure the pronunciation is very obvious for English speakers. I have no idea how to pronounce that, and would have trouble writing it too.

Moonshine5 · 15/01/2024 17:07

It's a no from me

IlsSortLaPlupartAuNuitMostly · 15/01/2024 17:07

I like it. You'll need to relax about the accents though.

AuroraForever · 15/01/2024 17:09

Inspired by the tragic love affair? It’s nice but she’ll spend a lifetime either spelling it out or pronouncing it for people. (Just don’t have a son and name him Abelard!)

itsmyp4rty · 15/01/2024 17:12

Love Eloise but not sure how Heloise is pronounced?

idontlikealdi · 15/01/2024 17:12

My cousin in Heloise, no accents, and very definitely not French. She pronounces it as Eloise.

I love it.

Xmasbaby11 · 15/01/2024 17:12

Never heard of it and wouldn’t know how to pronounce it or spell it.

but depends on your community - I live in Yorkshire not a French speaking area.

doodlepants · 15/01/2024 18:47

I used to live with a Heloise and it really suited her (she was French) it was unique but familiar. I have a "strange" name and my daughter does and I really don't think "he/she will spend their life explaining it to people" is a reason not to go for a name you love - it's your decision after all! I love being the only person in a room to have my name. When I was at the end of school and beginning of college/Uni I have a bracelet with my name on it so if anyone asked how it was spelled I could just show them without all the awkward spelling out and repeating (it's a long name) and once at Uni I would just show my Uni card. The fun of having a unique name way outweighs the pain of explaining it. My name is also of European origin and it's nice also to have that cultural link to your heritage.

Best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

TakeMe2Insanity · 15/01/2024 18:48

I used to work with a Heloise - she was English - beautiful name.

Singingasong · 15/01/2024 18:49

It’s nice but you don’t pronounce the ‘h’ in French so maybe English speaking people won’t know that and she will be ‘Hell-Louise.’

UserM6 · 15/01/2024 20:38

I think it’s pretty straight forward once people get over the “h”. Eloise is well known and easy to say so people will be able to pronounce it, even if you have to explain it initially.

Onelife2024 · 15/01/2024 20:59

I initially thought no as I thought it was pronounced “Hell-Louise” but now I know it’s more similar to Eloise I think it’s lovely, especially as you live in a French speaking area so most people will be familiar with the pronunciation. Your English friends and family will only need to be told once and then it won’t be an issue.

Lovely name. I suspect most English speakers will pronounce it as Eloise.

I think that’s more or less how it’s said??!

Anyway it’s nice and Eloise is popular in the UK

AdalineStephen · 15/01/2024 22:51

Most English speakers will want to add "... and Abelard", but it's a lovely name! Yes from me.

Fraaahnces · 15/01/2024 22:53

Gorgeous. Never going to go out of style. It also suits all ages from babyhood right through to old age. (I have a name that does not suit little kids - it’s kind of clunky, but works okay for adults.)

bleuclair · 15/01/2024 22:53

Yep, I was going to add ...and Abelard @AdalineStephen

Lovely name, Héloïse.

SkaneTos · 15/01/2024 23:01

It's a lovely name! Very pretty.

The acute accent and le tréma will probably be lost sometimes, when she is out travelling the world, though.

RaininSummer · 15/01/2024 23:04

It's a very lovely name. Always liked Eloise and Elise too.

KnittingKnewbie · 15/01/2024 23:06

Will it be pronounced El - woz ( with French flourish? )

Beautiful name
