We really struggled to name our first boy and now looking for inspiration for number two! We want something classic but outside the top 20! Any ideas very welcome…

Timeless classic names can also be very unpopular at times.

Case in point - Anne is outside the top 1500 names.

I have been a teacher for a number of years and have only ever taught one John. I think it's a lovely name!

John is so underused...I'm amazed it hasn't seen a comeback yet.

i would describe my taste in names as classic but not too popular. My son’s name is Matthew which I think is lovely and people comment all the time that you don’t hear of many babies with that name these days.

Other names I like with the same criteria:

Isaac
Ethan
Daniel
Joseph
Christopher
Adam

Max- my son is 24 and I only met two other Max's through school/nursery .
He;s gone through 6th Form and four years of University without meeting another . He has "Max" in his birth certificate but I can call him Maximillion when he's ignoring me (the little git)

FIL wasn;t impressed , said it was a dogs name Hmm

We have a Laurence/ Laurie.
Great name whether whatever he achieves as an adult.

SofaLion · 14/01/2024 08:05

Thanks all! Lucas and Rupert added to my list.

I really like Dominic but DH has bad associations with the name. My DS’s first and middle name have been mentioned here and new baby’s middle name so that’s reassuring!

Others that I like but already taken/too close to names in our close circle include: Joseph, Matthew, Daniel, Ivan.

I like the name Howard. I never see it anywhere. I also like the name John-Paul and knew a guy who was called John-Paul without anyone shortening it.
