AITA - unusual Baby name

Hi all-

So recently a friend of mine has announced their baby's arrival and the name.

Is there any way to approach them and explain that their weird baby name is... well too weird.

I googled the name at it's linked to a random film character in a weird movie and also very closely similar to a company they are about to start...

AITA for wanting to explain my feelings on the name before they register it?

OP posts:

YTA, unless the name is profane or in any way genuinely irresponsible.

Savannah is a bad name. A great big expanse of hot desert where nothing can grow.

And it's also the name of a suicidal porn star

Noseybookworm · 11/01/2024 22:07

By all means express your unsolicited opinion on their baby name and don't be surprised if that's the end of your friendship!

ThePoshUns · 11/01/2024 22:27

Is AITA the name?

StaunchMomma · 11/01/2024 23:00

I thought you meant the name was Aita.

😂😂😂😂

(Googles to see if there are any baby AITAs....)

It's not pronounced any way at all from my understanding just like we don't pronounce AIBU you see the letters and read it as Am I Being Unreasonable. AITA is an acronym for Am I the Arsehole.

Oh, I always pronounce it as eye-boo - whether in my head or when relating interesting threads to the family.

When we get the cross-posts from Reddit, I also read it as eye-tuh.

Is it just me who does that, then? Blush

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 11/01/2024 23:18

Which reminds me of a fun thread from some time back, when people were trying to come up with great pairs of baby names for MNers who had twins - and my favourite was Yabu and Yanbu Grin

Is it like Raita? Is that the cucumbery one?

Yes! 🤣🤣🤣

I wouldn’t say anything unless they asked my opinion. Some of the retorts here (HOW can you be so rude and nasty?) are a bit much, though. I bet that if the OP posted the name here, it would be slaughtered and nobody would care very much about being kind.

Alloftheskies · 12/01/2024 03:09

What good do you think that will do? You honestly think they'll change the name because you think it's wierd?
No. They are just going to be pissed off and there will forever be tension between you.
Just keep your opinion to yourself

Alloftheskies · 12/01/2024 03:12

And yeah pretty much any baby name that isn't Sophia or Oliver gets absolutely roasted on mumsnet but that's because everyone's anonymous and no one is bothered about ruining friendships.
In real life you should just shut your mouth if someone tells you what they are naming their baby unless they directly ask you for input

Trez1510 · 12/01/2024 03:50

It may not be as weird as you think?

When I heard my first Zuzu, I was immediately thinking she's gonna be called 'Zulu' at school!!

By the time I heard my third Zuzu, I thought it's the new Olivia. 😂

The same may be true of this child's name. Just because you haven't heard it used, doesn't mean it's not hurtling up the baby name charts.

stichguru · 12/01/2024 08:32

Nope unless it's like glaringly stupid, like a swear word or something - not your child, not you business!

literalviolence · 12/01/2024 09:26

You'd be very unreasonable to do this. Bear in mind that every name, very much including the mundane ones, are disliked by some people. There are no universally 'good' names. The only reason to say anything is if the parent's first language is not English and they are unknowingly calling their child something like Satan without knowing what it means in the UK.

@Octocat 😁

It’s gaining in popularity!

Mumof2girls2121 · 12/01/2024 12:28

Don’t say a word it’s none of your business
