After some thoughts on the name Laine/Lane? I would be leaning towards the spelling with the i for pronunciation reasons. Any other one syllable names I may like similar to this please? X

@sondot it's hard to spell the pronunciation but instead of "ay" it's more like "eh". So Lane would be like Lehhn. Sounds similar to how a Geordie would say it too.

Goodness don't do it you will be setting your child up for a lifetime of having her name read out wrong and having to correct and spell it out. Not even occasionally, it will be every single time.

Lane = Len Confused

Hmm. Laine is fine but Lainey is a bit porn-starry. Do not google!

peaceinourtime · 11/01/2024 12:17

To me it sounds very American, not that’s a problem.

Spaghettieis · 11/01/2024 12:20

There’s a character in Gilmore girls called Lane and I always felt sorry for her for having such a dull name! There’s actually a plot line in the show about how bands never write songs about girls called Lane because they always pick nicer sounding names instead.

DisforDarkChocolate · 11/01/2024 12:21

I like Laine but two me it's two syllables.

IsThePopeCatholic · 11/01/2024 12:24

I know of a girl called Grai.

squishee · 11/01/2024 12:25

What about Paige?

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 11/01/2024 12:27

I like Laine over Lane. But I also love the gilmore girls.

What about Lynn?

ianshe · 11/01/2024 12:36

I've known a female Laine since childhood so for me it's obviously a girls name. And I like it !

FrostieBoabby · 11/01/2024 12:44

Nice name but its also a book/magazine publisher which would put me off.

gingercat02 · 11/01/2024 12:46

It's my Aunt's NN as we couldn't say Lorraine therefore I love it cos she's fab

WaitingForSunnyDays · 11/01/2024 12:50

I think of Lane in Mad Men, and that puts me off somewhat, but otherwise I quite like it.

Is it a Welsh name op?

No. If it was it would be pronounced Ligh-neh.

I know a welsh Lainey, short for Lorraine

Wytchy · 11/01/2024 12:59

I think it's quite nice.

user1492757084 · 11/01/2024 13:19

A World Champion surfer is Layne Beachley. She is also involved in mentoring young women.
So I would spell the name, Layne, a known spelling and after someone who is successful, strong and caring.

Other one syllable names ..
Meg
Claire
Nance
Dawn
Raine
Peg
Lorne
Blythe
Jess

PrawnDumplings · 11/01/2024 17:41

Wren?

Sundaysunshine21 · 11/01/2024 23:34

Some one syllable names that I think go well with your style:

Raine
Sage
Blair
Skye
Shay
Quinn

BunnyBunnyJabberJabber · 12/01/2024 00:01

How about Lene, Leine, Lauryn, Larenne.

user1477391263 · 12/01/2024 03:01

I like Laine, but absolutely everyone including me is going to pronounce it “lane,” raining with “pane” or “rain.”

If you want a different pronunciation you need to pick a different name. And if you want Welsh pronunciation of a name, you need to pick a Welsh name.

Yes @Buffypaws I think you hit the nail on the head... I do like the one syllable American vibe names but with a sniff of modern vintage 🤣 what a mix!!! I hope that makes any sense at all

This description is exactly the vibe it’s giving to me. I like it.

Greer
Elke
Liv

and the ever-popular Wren!

Zoflorabore · 12/01/2024 04:07

I’m a Lainey and I often get called Laine. It would be a very unusual name for a baby born now as opposed to 1978 like me. I don’t like my name at all but there’s a reason I was called it so am sort of stuck with it!

mathanxiety · 12/01/2024 04:43

I like it.

It's much nicer than Elaine, which is very dated.
