Scheherazade

This is one of the only names I can agree on with my DP,(both Persian and an example of strong heroine who is a powerful storyteller) however I think it is only suitable as a middle name.
I have tried to explain to my DP that it is hard to pronounce and that it would become ‘Shahza’ however he doesn't understand what is wrong with that and I struggle to explain.

Shezraid is how I’ve heard it.

SlightlyJaded · 09/01/2024 23:09

I read it as Sher-A-Zade which is also probably wrong. However much you both love the name, there is no question that your DD will spend her life telling people how to pronounce and spell it. And It will absolutely be shortened - but that's ok I think?

KatPatPat · 09/01/2024 23:10

Zac Gildsmiths wife is called Shehereizade. That’s all I can add to your question

Teenagersscarethelivinshitoutofme · 09/01/2024 23:10

I know one - her name is generally pronounced correctly though is often shortened by family and friends to 'Sher'. I think it's a beautiful name.

ICouldEat · 09/01/2024 23:12

If I’m pronouncing it correctly in my head, it’s a lovely name.

I have a DN whose name is quite commonly shortened but it never has been for him, my name has never been shortened either.
I think if you always use the full name then friends and family will use it. Your DD will decide if she’s happy for her name to be shortened or not when she is older, she will soon let friends know if she isn’t happy for it to be shortened to anything.

PiratePetespajamas · 09/01/2024 23:12

I think it’s beautiful. Wasn’t someone in the famous Goldsmith family called Scheherazade? It’s not unthinkable.

BUT it’s very long. People will almost certainly misspell and mispronounce it. And what will they shorten it to? Because they certainly will - you need to work out what the abbreviations are likely to be and if you can stand any of them. Because that’s almost certainly, sadly, what she’ll end up being called.

Sugher · 09/01/2024 23:13

It’s a gorgeous name and great literary associations. People will be unfamiliar with the pronunciation but don’t let that stop you. And could you tell people to call her Hera or Zade if they absolutely must shorten it?

ConciseQueen · 09/01/2024 23:13

I can’t imagine wasting my child’s time with this. It is an endless typo scenario, however lovely.

MCOut · 09/01/2024 23:14

Sche-heri-zad is how I thought it was pronounced. She will probably have to correct people and it might get shorted. Though, kids nowadays do seem like they are more likely to put the effort in to get it correct. It probably depends where you live.

SkaneTos · 09/01/2024 23:14

It's a beautiful name.

theduchessofspork · 09/01/2024 23:15

It’s rather splendid though

Could be Zadie or Hera for short ?

Or Jasmine is nice..

PiratePetespajamas · 09/01/2024 23:15

That said pp above is also right: you can, with a little insistence, establish a full name as the only name to be used. My children all have long names - some like to shorten and I don’t mind; one I don’t like the nicknames for and have always insisted on the full name. That DC also tells people their name is not XYZ abbreviation, and insists themselves on the full name.

but, though long, it’s about half the length of Scheherazade!

TheBossOfMe · 09/01/2024 23:31

It’s a fabulous name - we have two in our family, one is always called by her full name (lives in London), the other is usually called Sherry (lives in Orange County).

OhBumBags · 09/01/2024 23:33

How is it pronounced?

I think I'm saying it wrong in my head

Try sounding it out in syllables and it’s pretty easy.

[SHUH] + [HERR] + [UH] + [ZAA] + [D]

goodnessmeits2024 · 09/01/2024 23:54

It's a beautiful name and beautiful music. What a lovely choice.

Guavafish1 · 10/01/2024 00:08

It's a nice name with rich culture behind it.

penjil · 10/01/2024 00:15

Is it pronounced Shuh-heh-riz-aada?

Pepperama · 10/01/2024 00:15

Only know one - she’s shortened it to Sheree

ShippingNews · 10/01/2024 00:17

I'd call her Sher. Beautiful name !

HundredMilesAnHour · 10/01/2024 00:20

If you're in the UK, I don't think it becoming 'Shahza' is a good idea. She'll end up being called Shazza and people will think her name is really Sharon.

MadamVastra · 10/01/2024 00:45

Yes like a pp I know one and it's shortened to Sherry

Babla · 10/01/2024 00:48

Bit of a mouthful

Luckypoppy · 10/01/2024 00:58

Shortened to;

Sherry
Sher
Is
Heri
Zade

You can use the shortened form you like so that it sticks.

Luckypoppy · 10/01/2024 00:59

And I love it. I wouldn't shorten it but it will get shortened so try it to one you like first!
