Hello, I'm curious to hear the general consensus on which of these two names is nicer. Thanks for your time.

Sasha. There are sooo many Mayas.

PickledScrump · 01/01/2024 19:32

I love Sasha. Maya has pronunciation/spelling issues and none are particularly nice

seagull82 · 01/01/2024 19:35

Sasha

Maya, Sasha reminds me of Bratz dolls and feels a bit 2000s to me.

Sasha is definitely a girls name.

The quote is ‚mostly a boy’s name‘, which I agree with. I’ve known 4 Sashas. All boys!

statetrooperstacey · 01/01/2024 19:46

loads and loads of maya’s , Love the name Sasha. I used to know one , we called her slasher because she was quite the handful !! ,

BoleynMemories13 · 01/01/2024 22:00

I prefer Sasha of the two.

Maya, as many have pointed out, has pronunciation and spelling issues. I've known it to be My-a and May-a in equal measure. Of the ones who pronounce it My-a, I've known them to spell it Maya, Mya or Myah. She'll spend her life correcting people.

I only know boys and men callled Sasha. It's a very common name for boys in continental Europe and in Russia. In fact in Germany it is only allowed to be used for boys!

I'd go with Maya for a girl.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 02/01/2024 12:04

Sasha, I love it as a girls name.

Sasha.
(The boys version is usually spelt ‘Sacha’.)

No, Sacha is the French spelling. The French pronunce ch as sh (eg chat or chateau)

Sascha is the German spelling and Sasha seems to be the most popular UK spelling

DRS1970 · 02/01/2024 12:05

All the Sasha's I have know have been male, so I would have to go with Maya for a girl.

This.

Maya.

I’ve met two Sasha’s in my life. Both female. One was an awful person, the other was a German Shepherd (and a very good girl).

ErrolTheDragon · 02/01/2024 23:13

The Sashas I know are male, full name Alexander.

I like Maya, not sure that the alternative pronunciations are a necessarily a big issue?

JustMaggie · 02/01/2024 23:33

Maya is nicer. I always thought Sasha was a boy's name.

apronbellybarbie · 06/01/2024 15:58

Sasha

Pinkyhere · 06/01/2024 17:45

I like them both.
Think I would go for Sacha and spell it that way.

RandomUsernameHere · 06/01/2024 17:47

Sasha, it's much nicer sounding

MerryChristmasToYou · 06/01/2024 17:49

Think I would go for Sacha and spell it that way.
But some would say it as Satcha.

ShowOfHands · 06/01/2024 17:56

Sasha is a boys name in my head. I know people have started to use it for girls, but in my head it's like calling a girl Brian. I've only met boys with several spellings depending upon where the Sasha/Sacha/Sascha was from.

As a pp said, the spelling differences are simply regional.

Maya is very common and pronunciation varies. I don't love it.

Roselilly36 · 06/01/2024 18:05

Maya, the only Sascha I know is male.

AngelaBB · 06/01/2024 18:08

I like May, you know how to pronounce it and it's simple and pretty .

HeartofHerts · 08/01/2024 22:44

I love Sasha. It has a long history of use in Slavic countries as a pet name for either Alexander or Alexandra, so isn’t one of those boys’ names which has been purloined by parents of girls.

Certainly a German Sascha or a French Sacha is overwhelmingly likely to be male, but that’s not how usage has developed in the English-speaking world. It’s a lovely name for a girl, familiar but not overused.

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 08/01/2024 23:00

I have a 17 year old Maya. There is only one other at her (large) school - it wasn't common in 2007 when she was born. She was also the only one in her primary school too. There weren't really any Mias either (not a fan of Mia)

That said I suspect there are many more and variations of in primary schools.

But if you like it then go for it. I still love it as a name. I also don't see the problem with not being the only X or y in the school or class. They aren't at school forever and people chose these names because they are nice names.

I sometimes think people for for some pretty awful names purely so they can be different!

sunflowerpinks · 09/01/2024 10:20

Think I would go for Sacha and spell it that way.

Why spell it the French way?

The French pronounce ch (chat) as sh, but in English ch becomes tch (to chat)
