I know it's been more popular for girls for a while now but what do you think?

Ah MN just can’t help themselves
its a name
why do MN think they can be so derogatory?

Someone is asking for opinions, I assume because they want to know how that name would be genuinely viewed by people. The problem with saying in real life is people will be polite and tell you it’s lovely; but on mumsnet people won’t pull punches which may feel harsh but helps you get an insight into how the name will really land (if that matters to you, which I assume it does if you’re asking on a forum)

Their teachers, and future recruiters etc will all be making an assumption about them based on their name (fairly or unfairly) and you don’t want to necessarily limit them.

Certain names can suggest something of their class / background - so whilst I can see why chav may be a problematic word, people all know the image it conjures up by using that word.

I would caveat my previous comment by saying I know female Morgan’s who are welsh and it doesn’t have the same connotation but I still don’t think it’s a very pleasing sounding word.

Babies called Morgan in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com)
Used more for boys than for girls in England & Wales

What @Muthaofcats said but I don't know any girls with the name.

Westwindworries · 27/12/2023 20:24

My nephew is Morgan. Most of the mugs / pencils / rulers etc with the name "Morgan" are pink. My impression is that it's increasingly a female name.

2Old2Tango · 27/12/2023 20:26

My DD is 25 and had a friend in her class called Morgan. I like it for a girl's name.

KThnxBye · 27/12/2023 20:27

I know four and all are girls/young women

I like it

Peoplemakemedespair · 27/12/2023 20:27

I know a few female Morgan’s, only one male. It’s a perfectly nice name. And it’s not fucking chavvy at all. Why do people have to be so nasty on here over names?

Gusti · 27/12/2023 22:18

It's not great but not awful. It really could go either way really. If she ends up a frumpy overweight middle aged woman with a short haircut the name Morgan really won't be doing her any favours. Pretty little wisps of girls can pull off almost any name but you've got to think longer term!

Toddlerteaplease · 27/12/2023 22:29

Awful. It's sounds so harsh.

Sunflower8848 · 27/12/2023 22:39

Megan sounds nicer and more feminine. Morgan makes me think of that chavvy 90’s clothing brand, was it Jane Morgan or something??

PickledScrump · 27/12/2023 22:42

@Sunflower8848 do you mean Jane norman?

Claricethecat45 · 27/12/2023 22:42

I had a beautiful mare named Morgance once !

After we had completed our 2 boy family - may have been tempted to use for a girl had the situation arose!

WildCherryBlossom · 27/12/2023 22:44

Morgan le Fay is an awful character in Arthurian legends. She is the first female namesake I think of when I hear this used for a girl and it's really not a positive association.

FreshWinterMorning · 27/12/2023 22:44

I like it!

This. ^ It's so nasty calling a name CHAVVY. These are peoples names! And peoples childrens name FFS. Hmm

NoelleNameChange · 27/12/2023 22:47

It makes me think of Morgan the clothes shop and Morgans the rum! Both very 90s connotations for me, so it feels dated and a bit hard to me for a girl.

I do like Morwenna and Morgana though

NoelleNameChange · 27/12/2023 22:51

@Sunflower8848 yes, I remember Morgan and then there was also Jane Norman. Was Morgan maybe only in Ireland? It wasn't necessarily a 'chavvy' shop imo. It was similar to somewhere like Mango or Topshop, but their style was very hard. Their sales assistants were often very very done up and unpleasant. I was a bit scared to go in there in the 90s 😂

PensionPuzzle · 27/12/2023 22:52

I've taught far more female Morgans than male ones! But plenty in either sex, it's a pretty 'everyday' name in our part of the world. A very uncontroversial but still slightly interesting choice, to me.

herewegoroundtheblueberrybush · 27/12/2023 22:52

It's unpleasant

PurpleOrchid42 · 27/12/2023 22:52

Very cool

Fenjal · 27/12/2023 22:55

My 8yo dd has two girl friends called Morgan. I now don’t even think of it as boyish.

TheMadGardener · 27/12/2023 01:54

I used to teach a girl called Morgan. Her sister was called Mercedes. I'm not joking - dad was a car nut and wanted all his kids named after makes of car. Lovely girls though!

Interested to know if you are in Scotland 👀

Daisybuttercup12345 · 28/12/2023 00:00

I think there are much nicer girls names.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 28/12/2023 00:05

I really don't like it for a girl. It's such a masculine name.

FrostieBoabby · 28/12/2023 00:05

I'm afraid it just makes me think of the car manufacturer so on par with Ford, Hyundai etc for me.

PlayMeOurSongOnGuitar · 28/12/2023 00:12

I’ve only ever known it’s used for boys, I don’t really like it as a girls name.
