DD is called Amelia, a name I loved for years and years but I never have guessed it would become so popular.... Now I'm hating it for it 😔

My sons have names that are in the top 10 most years. Can't say it bothers me, if anything it validates my opinion that they're nice names.

My least favourite names are often the contrived/try hard names.

It’s been popular for a v long time! How old is your DD?!

Anyway it’s a nice name, try not to let it bother you.

Yes I think your DD must be about 30? And if so surely by now you don't care that it's popular, she's a woman in her own right!

When it comes to naming, I love there to be a) well-known historical namesakes (e.g. Amelia Earhart) and b) people of different ages, alive today, with the name. It feels then like the child is part of a little interesting club of “Amelias” all drawn together by their name and nothing else. I find it fun and interesting!

There is nothing objectively wrong with Amelia; nothing tease-worthy, no criminal or immoral person who has come to light with the name, it’s not hard to spell or pronounce.

It is special because she is YOUR Amelia. A name that is too “special” is just a distraction. Don’t worry :)

Don't hate it! Amelia is a lovely name!

Think about the whole world! How many Amelias are there in the whole world??? Not that many. (Compared to how many people there are with the names Maria, Anna, John, or Daniel, and that is just mostly from the "Western world"! And it doesn't matter anyway (And just for the record, I really like the names Maria, Anna, John and Daniel).

I am from a Scandinavian country, and Amelia is not at all common name in my home country. 30 years ago the name Emilia was pretty popular, but that is not even the same name.

I love love love Amelia!!

I have an Ella, very popular. She’s 21 now and I still absolutely love her name, and more importantly, so does she!

She must be about 35. Don't hate her name.
Love Amelia.

BCBird · 23/12/2023 03:40

Why hate it? People grow into their name I feel.

Motherofpearlxoxo · 23/12/2023 07:23

I can sympathise. My DD is called Olive which I thought was a traditional but uncommon name….rolled up at Baby Sensory to find there are 3 in the same class!!

Ive effectively called her the equivalent of Louise in the 90s.

RuthW · 23/12/2023 14:23

I purposely avoided a name in the top 100. I wanted something different. It was different for about 15 years then suddenly went popular. It's now in the top ten and dd, who is now approaching 30, has three in her class.

Mintygoodness · 23/12/2023 22:00

Studies have shown that children like to have popular, well known names. So use it anyway if you love it. I liked Olivia 24 years ago but had a horrible inkling it was going to explode so didn't use it. Sure enough when my dd started Kindergarten here in the USA she had no less than 6 Olivia's in her class
My 17 year old son's GF is Olivia and I still think it's beautiful.

Enko · 24/12/2023 09:43

My dd has a name that rise to mid 20s and has consistently remained there for 20 or so years. I had wanted something unusual..

I hate how popular her name has become. I still love the name and our reasoning for choosing her name.
