Middle name for Elliot + Spanish surname

AbelDC · 19/12/2023 00:51

Hello! Our baby is due in February and we chose Elliot as a first name. Now, we are open to a middle name but we are lost.
My partner and I are Spanish so he will have 2 surnames (dad's and mum's) so his full name will be Elliot Díaz Gómez.
Middle names don't exist in Spain so we don't know how to choose it and we want it to fit with the surnames too.
Any ideas?

but middle names do exist? I e. Juan Carlos, Jose Antonio?

Anywho, please don't. It sounds HORRIBLE. I day this as a Spanish native speaker.

Doublebiscuit77 · 19/12/2023 10:41

I actually don't think you need a middle name, that sounds like a complete name that fits well together in itself.

Those are double names or compound names, but there is not a different status for each name. I.e. Juan is not the first name and Carlos the middle name.
Thanks for your opinion! (:

The thing is people and companies think Díaz is my middle name but it is my first surname. So if we add a middle name for the boy (let's say Elliot James Díaz Gómez), people will understand James is the middle name.
If you are native British, would you find strange that full name?

In the same position as you and neither child has one to avoid being called by both names if living in Spain.

Chickenkorma64 · 19/12/2023 23:39

Spanglish family here ( kids now young adults).
Our kids have the double Spanish surname and a first and second name. We have had no issues with this. They both have a Spanish first name and an English second name. We have always lived in the UK since they were born. I would give your baby a second name. without a second name it feels like something is missing!

I think one name is better than two here. You have a great surname. I'm not too keen on Elliot. What about Louis?

Doublebiscuit77 · 20/12/2023 09:43

Hi, no, i wouldn't find it strange at all.

Torganer · 20/12/2023 09:46

I don’t think you need a middle name either. They hardly get used. Unless it’s a family name or similar, they’re a bit pointless and adds time to form filling!!

Babybirdmum · 20/12/2023 10:33

Chose a middle name that means something such as your dads name or grandads name or another important man in your life

fedupwithbeinghot · 20/12/2023 11:41

I'm Spanish and have 2 surnames. I just put a dash in the middle.

My son has a British surname and no middle name. Think along the lines John Smith in the British passport, but John Smith García in the Spanish one.

I go by Maria Garcia-Rodriguez to avoid people thinking Garcia is the middle name

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 20/12/2023 12:50

I think it’s nice to have a middle name.
how about Hugo as works in both Spanish and English.
or Francisco.

Wow, this is a good tip I had never thought! So, can you legally use the dash for British authorities and normal double surname for Spanish authorities? That would be a great solution to not think on a middle name.
Thanks for replying!

Thanks for replying! But Elliot is not negotiable haha
It took us a lot of time to choose it and we love it. We already call him like that and change it now would be weird.

hi, yes, you can legally do that. I have been doing it for 30 years and have had no issues. I have the exact same spelling in both the Spanish and British passports, but for every day stuff, you can put the dash in the middle and there are no issues

Eixample · 20/12/2023 21:25

When you register the child at the Spanish Embassy there’s a procedure to issue a Spanish birth certificate without the hyphen between the two names for a child registered with the surnames hyphenated.

MerryChristmasToYou · 23/12/2023 19:17

Don't use Jay or James, they're filler middle names.
He doesn't need a middle name, and it will look like a 'Juan Carlos' type name, which is a bit like John-Charles in the UK.

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 23/12/2023 19:24

Unless you are going to call him the name in full it doesn't really matter as after the birth announcement people forget middle names.

Just pick something you like.
