What do people think about Cole as a boys name?

Hi everyone, I'm only 20 weeks pregnant but I found out we're having a boy at 12 weeks.
I really like the name Cole but my partner isn't too keen.

We live in Ireland and his family are all from here but I'm from north east, England so I need something we can't both pronounce.

Our daughter is called Erin with her middle name Rose.

What's people's thoughts on Cole as a name?

I like it

Vettrianofan · 14/12/2023 21:54

Old King Cole.

TankFlyBoss · 14/12/2023 21:55

I see dead people

IrishSee · 14/12/2023 21:57

Reminds me of Lego Ninjago I'm afraid.

kitsuneghost · 14/12/2023 21:59

Love it

YourNameGoesHere · 14/12/2023 21:59

*If your partner isn't keen surely it's a no-go? Shouldn't you chose a name you both love. Plenty of names work well for both English and Irish."

This ^^ surely it matters not what we all think. If your partner doesn't like it then it isn't even a contender.

My friend named her son Cole (from some American program she watched).

I really didn't like it, (but not my baby), he's 15 now. Obviously you get used to it over time & he's a lovely kid, so 💁🏻‍♀️ but no I still wouldn't call a child Cole.

ActDottie · 14/12/2023 22:13

Awful

CoddledAsAMommet · 14/12/2023 22:22

I don't love it, but as a shortening for Nicholas it's fine.

Charlie2121 · 14/12/2023 22:24

Your partner is spot on. It’s horrific.

MrsAvocet · 14/12/2023 22:32

I am influenced by the fact that my now adult son was good friends with a Cole all the way through school and he was lovely. (I'm sure he still is in fact, I just haven't seen him for a few years!) All his siblings had quite unusual names - they're a very arty, slightly unconventional family so that may have something to do with it. But it's a name with a good association for me so I quite like it. I think it makes a big difference to how you view a name if you like or dislike someone who has it.

Bertiesmum3 · 14/12/2023 22:33

I know 3 females who all transitioned to male, and changed their name to Cole!

Itmwtoty · 14/12/2023 22:35

Awful.

hardtoes · 14/12/2023 22:36

Nothing wrong with Cole at all. Go with it if you both agree

Lydia777 · 14/12/2023 22:44

Sorry but I think its chavvy.

BlippiAndMeekah · 14/12/2023 22:46

It's my cat's name 😸

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 14/12/2023 22:47

I don’t hate it but I don’t like it either. I think there are much better options.

HopeAllOK · 14/12/2023 22:48

Old King Cole

AndThatWasNY · 14/12/2023 22:51

It's not great. I have a weird name and would hate to introduce myself as Cole. No not Coal, Cold....sorry I know my parents had no taste....

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 14/12/2023 21:36

I like but I'm a Charmed fan.

Same! He was hot as hell.

Scirocco · 14/12/2023 23:24

The Dragon Age character is pretty good, but he's a dead murder-hobo who may have killed his own sister, so possibly not the best namesake.

theduchessofspork · 14/12/2023 23:43

I would at least put Nicholas on the birth cert (which is what it’s traditionally short for( because Cole is a strong flavour and he might not like that (I don’t like if)

Thanks everyone I think I'll go back to the drawing board. I didn't think of how American it was, which I want to avoid as we do go over there quite a bit to see his family. Maybe that's where I got the name.

Some of my partners favourite are
William
Ronan
Tadhg

Unfortunately he has a very large family, full of male cousins and I don't want a name that one of them has used. My partner, his dad and two different cousins all have the same name and it's confusing sometimes. Especially with the same surname as well. They've all had each other's doctors appointments and parcels sent to each others house as well. (Joys of living in a small village)

Some of his family speak Irish as their first language so I sort of want to fit in a bit. We live in a small village and I'm sort of the only outsider here so I'm trying to find a Irish name that I can actually pronounce. With my dodgy northern accent even though I haven't lived there in 15 years. (I won't go with cole, I'm not sure where it came from) we don't have gas here so we've all got coal fires as well. 🙈 I'm blaming hormones for that name.

I used to pronounce my daughters name slightly different to everyone else here and I didn't realise until I went back to work at the bar I work at and people where correcting my pronunciation of it. Apparently I used to say Air-rin but it's eh-rin. My partner thinks I say it ok, just with an accent but I think I offend some people. Some have even laughed. 😔everyone here does know each other so they alway ask how my daughter is doing. All my family pronouns it Air-rin as well but I've managed to say it right now. I want to avoid it this time round.

Can anyone suggest any names? I'm clueless about boys. My family is mainly girls and I even went to an all girls school.

I used to be absolutely obsessed with it and it would have been my boys name but unfortunately it’s been ruined by overhearing kids called it and often it’s very chavvy mums shouting it. I think Kate Ferdinand’s sons name ‘Cree’ has a similar vibe? Really like it or tonight someone on here has suggested ‘Cade’ which I’d also put in the same category

DGHZ · 15/12/2023 00:27

Also please take opinions on here with a pinch of salt. I haven’t read the comments but have seen you’ve changed your mind now on it. Don’t be put off by what people say on here if you really love a name. I posted three names before my son was born and they were ripped to shreds. The one that came out as least favourite was the one I loved most and is now his name. The people on here were from various parts of England and not from where I’m from (not England) 😂! They said all sorts of horrible things about the name. My son is now called it and in my local area it was number 1 most popular name last year! So clearly I’m not the only one who thinks it’s nice!
