I know a Cillian spelt Killian who is as Irish as they get! I weirdly read Cillian as Sillian even though I know it's not.
My name is spelt "wrong" as my parents anglicised it. Its fucking annoying!

There are loads of Killians in Ireland.

If I met a baby Kylian I'd just think 'oh like Mbappé' and assume you were fans. The spelling certainly looks wonky to me but as far as footballers go he's about as famous as it gets these days, so I'll only expect this version of the name to gain in popularity. I wouldn't feel offended or insulted like a pp.

There's also a French perfume brand called Kilian. They just love versions of that name it seems!

Those who say it's not pronounced the same, I've heard KM say he's name and it is the same as Cillian, just with a French accent, like Marie. Is that what you mean by different or do people have a completely different pronunciation in mind?

Cillian is a great name. Kylian is daft.

No they won't, because the vast majority of his peers will know the name because of Mbappe.

I prefer the K spellings to Cillian, and it neatly avoids having "kill" spelling too. Winner!

I think the intended pronunciation of kyllian would be much clearer. I get that there's a famous footballer but a lot of people haven't heard of him.

I like Cillian and Killian is ok as the anglicised version, but the Kylian spelling is one I just dislike.

It reads like it should be pronounced 'Kylie Ann'; even knowing the intended pronunciation, my brain still wants to start with 'Ky' rather than 'Ki'. And that sounds like a Kylie Minogue fan was disappointed at having a boy and wanted to shoehorn in a Kylie reference anyway.

Cillian or Killian reads much better, lacks the 'trying to be younique' cringe factor, and wouldn't date like Kylian may well do.

To Welsh speakers, the Welsh name Dylan isn't pronounced Dillun.

@sunqueen97 , it's a celebrity name and will be considered a bit naff, but if you like it , use it.

I knew how to pronounce that way of spelling it, its quite common, probably because of mbappe.
However I don't think I could have my childs name with the word "kill" in it.

While I've said I would use Cillian myself, people seem to be forgetting y is sometimes pronounced like i. Sylvia, Sylvester, as well as Dylan mentioned above. There are plenty of worse names and worse spellings.

they have heard of pele, maradona, Geoff Hurst etc. World Cup glory elevates you to a certain status so the chances are he will be at least on football circles

I think quite a few could say Diego! But I see your point - but given the increase in popularity of the name I think enough would know and there is much more a tendency nowadays to use the first and surname (and not was always a South American thing anyway). I always knew it was Geoff Hurst, Nobby Stiles, Alan Ball, Stanley Matthews etc

wouldn’t pick it myself but it definitely as a spelling is becoming far more common
