Girls shortlist

Would appreciate thoughts on our shortlist, a few weeks to go and I’d like to narrow down to two or three names before she arrives and then pick from those few at birth. We seem to keep adding to the list rather than making it shorter so need some outside opinions.

Elodie
Daisy
Ruby
Lucy
Eden
Matilda
Imogen
Delilah

None of these are bad names, but for my personal taste, my favourites are

Elodie: Underused, not difficult to spell or write, French flair, modern, sassy and spunky

Matilda: Studious, intelligent and bookish, has nice nicknames and is a solid name

Eden is beautiful. Has a strong yet feminine feel to it and what a wonderful meaning.

I really like Daisy but it is very popular, if that bothers you. Lucy, Ruby and Matilda are nice too.

Imogen isn't my taste. It feels a little bland to me, but it's still a nice name.

Elodie sounds to me like it it's meant to be Melody. I like the nickname Elle though.

Delilah is a big no for me. Even if you aren't religious, it's not a great association to have with your child.

Eden is beautiful. Has a strong yet feminine feel to it and what a wonderful meaning.
Eden is unisex Babies called Eden in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com)
It makes me think of Eden Hazard and Sir Anthony Eden, and the Eden Project

Elodie - I used to like this when I thought it was pronounced EL-O-dee, less so now I know its Melody without the M. Seems popular though so guess loads love it. May date as it seems very 'in'

Daisy - it's OK just a bit too twee for my tastes

Ruby - love it. Its got the nice ee ending but has some sass about it

Lucy - i like it (though prefer Ruby). Probably the most classicalnof your list, but beware L names are everywhere

Eden - nice enough but I actually prefer it for a boy

Matilda - done to death in my area, plus I'm not keen on Tilly

Imogen - my second favourite on your list

Delilah - ok just not for me

Ruby… know lots of teenage ruby’s but no little ones. It’s nice

Lucy … really lovely.. the most classic from your list. How about Charlotte or Alice?

Eden .. doesn’t belong on this list. Totally different vibe from the rest.

Matilda.. used to really like this but I’m not such a big fan now. Maybe because I really don’t like Tilly.

Imogen .. it’s ok.. don’t go mad and don’t like Immy

Delilah.. love.. also love Jemima

Lucy and Ruby are my favourites.

I really dislike Elodie, Eden and Delilah.

They're ok, most of them very popular at the moment, so depends if that bothers you.

Favourite is probably Elodie. I quite like Eden as it's a bit different, but could potentially sound downmarket as a pp suggested.

For me Ruby is a dogs name, so I'd never choose this.

Imogen & Lucy very classic and beautiful.

Could also consider Alice?

@aubergineman Sorry but that is so silly to say that 'Ruby is a dog's name'. What has happened is that many people now give their dogs human names (like Ruby, or Katie, or Max, any human name that's a bit shorter. I don't think anyone seems to have called their dog Elizabeth for example. Lizzy or Betty, probably yes.) You can't then turn around and say the name is now 'a dog's name' despite all the thousands of humans with that name!

Well that isn't quite what I said. I said for me Ruby is a dogs name. I know several dogs called Ruby, and even the Kaiser Chief's song Ruby js about a dog, so not a new thing.

There are plenty of short names that aren't pets names; Ian, Ann, Eva, Alice, Ryan.

Equally there are names that are common for pets; Luna, Monty, Ruby, Milo.

I'm not saying don't "oh my goodness don't use that, it's hideous!", just raising a point the OP might want to consider.

Imogen and Matilda are fab. The others are not to my taste.
