Evan or Angelo

Hello,

We are Greek due our DS in a couple of months!

We chose the name Evangelo or Angelo due to family/personal reasons.

We live in the Uk and the big question is should we go with Evangelo as full name and Evan as nn?

Or should we go with Angelo as full name and no nn?

Which name do you prefer? Also our surname is very Greek and the name Angelo wouldn’t be weird combined with the surname, it won’t be like Angelo Brown!

Thank you all :-)

I prefer Angelo.

Whichever you like best. Evan is more conventional in the OK. What does Angelo shorten to, and what does it sound like in Greek?

Fallingribbons · 03/12/2023 13:16

Angelo won’t be shortened!

In Greek is not really “Angelo” , it’s Aggelo with a hard g (like golf)…

But I appreciate that this is not very British/International sounding, hence the Angelo !

Evangelo nn Evan

Angelo is a lot of pressure.. and it’s slightly effeminate in a UK context because the only names build from Angel in recent use are female

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/12/2023 13:36

Angelo will almost certainly be shortened. Even names like Ian and Mia get shortened.

Olive19741205 · 03/12/2023 13:41

I prefer Evangelo.

AyrshireTryer · 03/12/2023 13:44

Sorry OP, but Angelo, made me instantly think of, "Long ago high on a mountain in Mexico."
Evan and Evangelo is much nicer.

NorthernAttitude · 03/12/2023 13:47

Agree with PP, Angelo will be shortened by his school friends and that's beyond your control. I'd go Evan if that's an issue for you but both are good names.

JMSA · 03/12/2023 13:49

I like Angelo!
Evan will always remind me of the plus size clothing shop, Evans. I don't know why that puts me off, but it does. And I say that as a fattie Grin

RunningGearOn · 03/12/2023 13:50

I've never heard Evangelo as a name, I rather like it. And Evan is obviously very well understood as a name in the UK which gives your DS option. That said I think Angelo is fabulous, I find it gives really manly vibes and I imagine a dark haired little boy suiting the name.

JMSA · 03/12/2023 13:50

Also, I work in a high school and the notion that names are always shortened just isn't true. It's less common these days. We have Joshuas, Benjamins, Robertos, etc.

Scruffington · 03/12/2023 13:53

Angelo.

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/12/2023 13:59

@JMSA , just because they're not shortened formally in a classroom doesn't mean they're not ever going to be shortened.

dontcallmelen · 03/12/2023 14:01

My BiL is called Angelo so have a soft spot for the name he is lovely.

MumUndone · 03/12/2023 15:50

Angelo. I like Evangelo but Evan is so pedestrian.

They're not even shortened by classmates Confused

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/12/2023 19:25

As far as you know. I don't think we used diminutives or nicknames in lessons, but we definitely used them.

ginteio · 14/12/2023 08:54

I prefer Angelo, it feels softer.
