Biblical Girls Name or not?

livingthebeachhutlife · 03/12/2023 10:26

I have a boy with a biblical name in the top 20.
We've picked another top 20 biblical boys name, if this baby is a boy. In fact, I've had this name since my first son and love both names.
But I just can't seem to love any girls names. I had picked Matilda last time, but now can't use.
I prefer names that are not easily shortenable (I know not always guaranteed but as close as possible).
Not sure whether to continue the biblical theme. There's a lot of biblical girls names I don't like or can't use due to negative associations (Ruth, Esther, Hannah, Sarah, Martha, Mary)

Biblical names I like, but not sure if I love:
Delilah
Eve
Eden (too unisex?)
Phoebe (risk of mis spelling?)
Faith
Ariel (would possibly use Arielle to ensure pronunciation?)

Other names:
Lily (mention of lily in the bible)
Summer (I love all things beach/seaside/summer but is it too cheesy?)
Athena (love Greece and Greek names)
Sofia (as above)
Eliana (again and also love the sun link)

Please help me find a girls name I love.

Personally I wouldn't restrict myself to Biblical names.

Chloe is mentioned in one of Paul's letters and is Greek.
Miriam? Anna? Dinah? Leia? Lois? Thersa? Naomi?

Eden is a girl's name to me, not unisex.

Delilah - dreadful and falls into the Lily/Lila/Layla/Lola trend
Eve - nice but there are lots of Evie/Eva/Ava/Evelyn/Ivys
Eden - don't like it, seems too trendy. Sounds like a gardening brand
Phoebe - ok, a bit overused
Faith - faithless
Ariel - washing powder

Lily - overused
Summer - naff
Athena - not keen, and doesn't really shorten naturally.
Sofia - overused if you look at Sophia + Sofia
Eliana - Ellie/Ella/El names overused

There are only 3 biblical names in the top 20, and other than Noah they don't seem particularly religious. I wouldn't think 'both biblical names' about names like Jacob and Phoebe, or Thomas and Eve, for example.
Noah and Delilah/Eden/Eve seem a bit too Old Testamenty.

peaceinourtime · 03/12/2023 14:54

Delilah is a nice name go with that.

MaloneMeadow · 03/12/2023 15:28

Delilah - awful and dated. Lilah isn’t bad
Eve - nice but overused, prefer Eva
Eden - quite like, it’s very much a girls name to me, never heard it used for a boy so wouldn’t worry about it being unisex
Phoebe - lovely, it’s become more mainstream so can’t imagine many issues with spelling
Faith - cringey and council estate vibes
Ariel/Arielle - Absolutely not to Ariel. Very twee and of course there’s the Disney Princess and washing powder connotations. Ariella is quite nice and avoids those

Other names:
Lily - far too common
Summer - really like this but would only use it for a summer baby
Athena - cringey and try-hard
Sofia - common but very nice
Eliana - just alright

Unless you’re absolutely set on one of those names then I don’t seen why you’d limit yourself to biblical names only.

How have you missed the negative Delilah connotations from the Bible?!?!

Mary and Martha were both disciples and friends of Jesus. Lovely names.

There's also Tabitha, Dorcas, Noa, Naomi and Rachel.

gingerbread55 · 03/12/2023 21:43

If you're religious and that's why you're choosing a biblical name then you probably won't want to go with Delilah for obvious reasons, as lovely as it is! There are some really cute ones out there. I love your idea of having both your children with biblical names, wish I'd done that.

Grace - very common but so beautiful
Hope
Faith - so much meaning, love it
Miriam - very biblical and popular in France
Chloe - love that name, not obviously biblical
Eden - on your list, I think it's so cute for a little girl and very feminine for an adult.

Exciting! Good luck x

PermanentTemporary · 03/12/2023 21:47

There's quite a range there.

Susannah?

ChocolateCandle · 03/12/2023 21:50

Miranda instead of Matilda?

AngharadM · 03/12/2023 21:52

Lydia
Judith
Talitha

EvlisPersley · 03/12/2023 21:54

I had a great Aunt, her full name was Keziah (ke-zy-a) - I believe a Hebrew name?
she was always called auntie Kitty or Kit
I’ve always loved that
good luck with your new baby 🥰

gotomomo · 03/12/2023 21:57

Mine have biblical names, there's many more especially including New Testament

mnahmnah · 03/12/2023 21:59

I love Naomi and Esther

Doublebiscuit77 · 03/12/2023 22:04

I agree with PP, i wouldn't limit to Biblical names.

Delilah - I just don't like the sound, or the song, or the Bible story
Eve - fine
Eden - not a traditional Bible person's name, modern and trendy, fine
Phoebe - popular enough that most people can spell it. Really like it.
Faith - dislike.
Ariel - I've only met a male Ariel
Lily - fine
Summer - fine, seems to have real meaning for you.
Athena (love Greece and Greek names) - like this
Sofia - very popular but i still love it, prefer the Sophia spelling
Eliana - ok

Suggestions- from the Bible- Chloe, Lydia, Elizabeth, Mary, Naomi, Martha, Rachel

Greek-inspired- Daphne, Penelope, Petra, Persephone, Phaedra, Xanthe, Cassandra

Doublebiscuit77 · 03/12/2023 22:05

Ah forgot you can't use Mary and Martha- ignore those!

NoTango · 03/12/2023 22:12

I find it really interesting when Eden comes up on girl name threads as I have only ever known it as a boy's name! (I've only met three Edens in 20-odd years working with kids, all boys)

Nonplusultra · 03/12/2023 22:13

Speaking as one of the afflicted, don’t give your child a name from a popular song - it’s beyond irritating.

atthebottomofthehill · 03/12/2023 22:14

Absolutely no reason to go for a biblical theme unless you are religious and want to do so. Your first child's name may be biblical but it's also very common, most people won't attribute your choice to the bible.

I like Athena of your choices. It's historical but not religious

Devilsmommy · 03/12/2023 22:15

What about Joanna. She was important to jesus in some way, sorry can't remember exactly what

NannyR · 03/12/2023 22:27

Lydia - it has a similar sound to Lily, it's Greek and it's biblical.

Jemimah, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Leah

Toomanycaketins · 03/12/2023 23:09

rebekah
salome
Tamar (Tamara)
Esther
Ruth
Naomi
Eunice
Lois
Tabitha
Lydia
Anna/Hannah
Abigail

MerryChristmasToYou · 04/12/2023 09:43

Keziah will probably get said as Kez-ya not the rather lovely Kez-eye-ah quite a lot.

user1492757084 · 04/12/2023 10:50

Do you love..
Phoebe
Susanna
Elizabeth
Eliza
Rebecca
Rachael
Esther
Johanna
Jamima
Delphi
Adele
Sophie
Anna
Nichola

MerryChristmasToYou · 04/12/2023 10:53

Is Jamima a name? It looks like a bad spelling of Jemima

haveacat · 13/04/2024 21:04

Bethany (town near to Jerusalem)
Jesse (male in the Bible but now used at female name)
