Just that really. Middle name either way would be Joseph. Any particular preference and why?

Daniel Joseph
Dominic Joseph

Thanks,
R.

If you are in the U.K., after Cummings and Raab, please don't pick Dominic.

Orangeteatime · 03/12/2023 09:14

Like both but prefer Dominic.

makeminealargeoneagain · 03/12/2023 09:17

Daniel is better.

sandletown · 03/12/2023 09:27

Daniel

Marmalade71 · 03/12/2023 09:45

Daniel, though would probably prefer Joseph Daniel it's still a lovely name combo. Plus the "flow" depends on your last name of course.

Not sure Dominic is as bad as some are suggesting. I know a couple of late teens who are both "Dom" - no name based problems as far as I'm aware.

SunnieShine · 03/12/2023 10:52

Dominic. And Dom for short.

@LittleBrownBaby In the North of Ireland so not hugely concerned with those associations even though they are well known namesakes. Just as equally put off by Daniel O’Donnell lol.

@peppermum60 haha great name! I don’t mind Dom as a nickname either, it’s no different to Dan to me. Would only plan on using the full names ourselves.

@TomatoSandwiches Grandfathers are James and Joseph. We used James as the middle name before so would use Joseph next time given the chance.

I like Dom but not Dominic. The minic bit sounds a bit mean to me.

Daniel's fine, Dan and Danny fine too.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 03/12/2023 21:50

Love Daniel.
Not keen on Dominic, especially if nn is Dom.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 03/12/2023 22:24

Prefer Daniel It's my DS2's middle name

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 03/12/2023 23:04

100% Dominic. I know a million 'Dans'.

shoopshoopdedoo · 04/12/2023 11:41

Daniel. I also love Danny/Dan

I like both but I think I like Daniel better in combination with Joseph (which is one of my very favourite names).

all with meanings linked to fighting

Dominic is nothing to do with fighting. It means literally means "of the Lord" but has long been associated with Sunday ("dies domini" or The Lord's Day). The only names I can think of that actually mean anything to do with fighting are Mark and Martin, which are both derived from Mars, the Roman god of war. I can picture a tough fighty Mark (although they're not all like that), but Martin has always struck me as a surprisingly gentle sounding name, given the meaning.

@moonshinepoursthroughmywindow oh that’s very interesting! Didn’t know that.

Imo it depends. if you’re a white English family then Daniel, if you’re Eastern European then Dominic

Olika · 07/12/2023 20:10

Daniel

greglet · 07/12/2023 20:19

Dominic. One of my favourite names.

resm · 08/12/2023 08:47

@Libertyy We’re a white Irish Catholic family and I think Dominic would be seen as quite a Roman Catholic name so not unusual per se, although that being said I don’t know any Dominics under 20.

I love both - in fact funnily enough these were the two names I mentioned slightly wistfully to DH the other day that I liked but hadn’t used (he’s not so keen on either so they didn’t make the cut!). For those saying they know a million Dans - aren’t they all adults? I don’t know any under 40 but it doesn’t sound dated - beautiful name. And Daniel is my favourite Elton John song!

Dominic feels slightly fancier, and labels you as more obviously Catholic (certainly all the ones I know are) but has a great rhythm to it somehow, esp. with Joseph. Don’t think you can go wrong with either!

Dominic is a more interesting name. But both are nice.
