Italian & Polish names

digitalgirl · 13/03/2008 17:41

I'm half Italian, and DH is half Polish.

I was thinking if we have a girl it might be nice to give her a Polish name and a boy an Italian name but can't think of good ones for either.

So far we have Luca

I can only think of nice girls names in italian: Francesca and Allessandra

Don't really like Tatyana. SIL is already called Katya

Then to go in a completely different direction I wondered about naming after GPs or our parents who are called:
Josef
George
Angel
Luciano
Angela
Felicidad
Julian
Daphne
Julieta
Giuseppe

Naming them Joseph or Josephine doesn't really appeal.
Nor does Julian or Juliette/Julianne.
My brother is already called Luciano.
I'm already called Angela.
Thought about Felix or Felicity (but not sure...)

It's soooo hard!

Raffaele
Daniele
Paolo
Fortunato
Carmelo
Marco

Marta is a good name both in Italian and Polish, I think. I really like Josef.

My Polish inlaws always Anglicise their names -- for the sake of cultural mintegration I suppose

So, Wladislaw (my FIL) was always referred to in my presence as Walter, etc.

Threadworm · 13/03/2008 18:10

That would be integration.

Mintegration is practiced by Polos rather than Poles.

I like the following Polish names:

Izabela
Margareta (Gosha for short)
Agniezka (Aga for short, or Agnes in English)
Alexandra
Natalia

(dh is polish)

digitalgirl · 13/03/2008 20:12

Other brother is Paolo Raffaele, have two cousins called Marco!

Oo, I like Marta, Izabela, Natalia (could be shortened to Talia). Don't think DH would go for Margareta, but I quite like Maggie.

Any other boys names? Polish or Italian? I have a 'feeling' I'm carrying a boy, have clear skin and very little MS.

Agniezka is a lovely name. So is Agnes -- ready for a resurgence I think

Threadworm · 13/03/2008 20:20

Tomasz is nice (my ds1's name). Can be easily Anglicised.

stanleysmother · 14/03/2008 13:13

Hi,
I live in Poland w Polish DH, my girls have Polish names. DD1 is Milena (which you pronounce Millenna(as in Millennium, not as in Myleena as my aunt will insist aagghh). Means beloved and actually comes from Czech. Diminutive: Mila ("Mee-la").
Her middle name is Maria which in Polish you accent on the 1st syllable. Short form Marysia (pron: Marisha - which in Eng might work nicely as a name in its own right).

DD2 is Pola (pron: Polla). Originally a diminutive of Apolonia but now functions as a name in its own right. Her middle name is Taylor so that doesn't help you much.
If I had another I would like Zoja (Zoya) which is Zoe.
The names Pruners has given are all a bit generation-bound - very common names in our generation (early 40's to late-20s now), except Anna which is all-time most common girl's name in Poland since time immemorial.
Margareta is not Polish (Malgorzata in Polish).

Boys' names popular in PL atm:
there is a big resurgence of granddad-generation names so: Stanislaw (staszek for short), Jozef (yoo-zef), etc.
Since the Pope died Karol has come back into fashion.
Lots of names that used to be considered Jewish - Daniel, Dawid.
Evergreens: Michal, Krzysztof (but who in their right minds would choose sth with so many z's in??), Tomasz, Bartek (a dimin. for Bartosz or Bartlomiej), Maciej (an old form of MAtthew) or Mateusz, Jakub (Kuba for short), Jan (Yan), Pawel (Paul), Jacek (yatsek, actually a dimin. of Hyacinth but who'd know it?).
Other ones I can think of from DDs' nursery: Igor (but that's Russian), Roch, Wiktor, Kamil, Szymon (simon), Wojtek (there is a cool book just out by some Scottish schoolteacher about a bear called this that actually served in the Polish army in the war).
What about Stefan? Not too way out.
Our choice for a boy was Bruno but we joked he's waiting for us to change our minds as we've had 2 girls .
Polish kings have been e.g. Mieszko, Boleslaw, Kazimierz but you have the impenetrable-on-paper-look problem there.
The dimin. of Aleksander is Olek (Oleg is Russian).

Hmm, sorry this got a bit long, but start me on names Polish and I could keep going all day. If you want any more ideas just say...

hoxtonchick · 19/03/2008 10:40

anya (maybe polish spelling is ania??)

Sari · 19/03/2008 10:56

I know several little girls called Maia / Maya(dd is one of them) because it's a name that works in so many countries and languages. They have parents from countries including Italy, Germany, West Indies, Switzerland, England, India.

Ditto Oliver. There are a couple of Polish Olivers at my children's school and it's an easy one for Italian speakers.

jeanjeannie · 19/03/2008 11:55

DP is half Polish, half Serbian and he's Aleksandar.....but always called Sasa (Sasha) which I think has more roots in his Serbian past...although his mum's family hail from Poland/Belarus borders - so quite prevalent there. His brother is Nikolai (love that name) and the family never use the traditional pet name for him, which is Kolya

Other names I love within his family are Ania, Eva, Klara, Josef, Marta, Daphne and Natasa.

CountessDracula · 19/03/2008 11:55

Marta?

Not sure on Pola. Just think of Pola bear.
I used to Au Pair in Italy for a little girl called Ilaria. Loved the name until the mum told me it was Italian for Hilary, and the child was named after Hilary Clinton!
Love Luca, especially since the name makes me think of gorgeous doc in ER.
