What do you think of the name Jamie for a boy?

I've always liked it, not a huge fan of 'James'

What do you think?

It’s ok, but there’s plenty of females with the same name, so I wouldn’t use it.

LucyInTheParkWithDragons · 01/12/2023 07:05

Not great as an actual name, fine as a NN. I’m usually fine with NNs as real names, but Jamie will be really babyish when he’s an older child, let alone an adult.

Jacob could be shortened to Jamie instead, if you don’t like James?

Mindymomo · 01/12/2023 07:09

My adult son is called Jamie, he was going to be James for a long while, then DH said he wasn’t keen on it. I’m so glad we changed it, as he had 2 James in his class at school virtually in all his school years, after school clubs and sports teams. He really likes his name, it suits him perfectly.

toastofthetown · 01/12/2023 07:42

While I much prefer it as a diminutive for James, I wouldn’t have any concerns about Jamie not suiting an adult. I do find it a bit date though. Maybe just my experience but I know a lot of Jamies in their 30s or 40s but feel like young Jameses tend to just go by James.

I’ve worked with hundreds of Jamies, I don’t know or care if their full name is James. And especially in the current naming culture where the most recent top hundred had Harry, Archie, Freddie, Charlie, Alfie, Tommy, Teddy, Albie, Reggie, Ronnie, Frankie, Toby, Bobby and Ollie. Jamie sonically fits right in.

Laboheme78 · 01/12/2023 08:08

My son is James, known as Jamie. He has the choice as to which to go by. It has never occurred to me that Jamie is not an adult name - I associate it with e.g Jamie Dornan and the gorgeous Colin Firth character in Love Actually. It really suits my son and in our case I’m glad we didn’t go with William (our other option) just because there are about 10 in his year group. If you like Jamie it’s your choice!

DuchessOfSausage · 01/12/2023 08:40

I'd put James on the BC, but Jamie is fine for an adult.
Jamie isn't much used for girls.

Theoldwoman · 01/12/2023 08:45

It’s okay. I have a cousin called Jamie ( now deceased) and I only found out he was actually a James when I read his death notice in the paper.

I know more girl Jamie’s/Jaimees’s than boys.

Grumpynan · 01/12/2023 08:50

I personally would use James and call him jamie,

jamie is a cute loving soft name, but there will be times in his life when he needs to be a James

TrustPenguins · 01/12/2023 08:53

I like it.

Ittastesvile · 01/12/2023 09:01

It's not my taste but it's a perfectly good name.
I don't know any female Jamies and would have absolutely no qualms using it for a boy.

Ittastesvile · 01/12/2023 09:03

PS the Jamie I know never uses James. He's a very successful man, I really don't think using Jamie has held him back.

GreatGateauxsby · 01/12/2023 09:06

If you want to do that call your son James on his birth cert.
NN Jamie….

some people keep it to adulthood but a lot of men would/will want to switch to james

or go for something like Jonathan which has loads of variants Johnny, Jon, John, nat, Nathan etc

SallyWD · 01/12/2023 09:06

I love James but am not mad on Jamie. When I was at school I'm the 80s the Jamies were all naughty boys! Kind of like Tyler or something today
I think Jamie is OK as a nickname for James.

Berlinlover · 01/12/2023 09:08

I don’t like James but love Jamie. I always thought James a bit of a wet name.

SecondUsername4me · 01/12/2023 09:10

The only Jamie/Jaime's I know are women.

DuchessOfSausage · 01/12/2023 09:13

Babies called Jamie in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com)
I don't know any Jamies/Jaimes who are women.

RockStarship · 01/12/2023 09:22

I like Jamie for an adult, although that might be affected by the fact that I know an adult Jamie who is lovely. I also know a 10 year old Jamie and always think what a lovely name it is whenever I hear his name being called. Plus it's not commonly used anymore but also not a marmite or "out there" name.

PaperDoves · 01/12/2023 09:31

I love it.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 01/12/2023 09:33

Personally I prefer it as a nickname for James, but it’s fine by itself as well.

DelphiniumBlue · 01/12/2023 09:44

I have an adult James, he's always been known as Jamie. I think he likes the slight separation between formal and non-formal use, eg job applications/medical appointments.

PiggieWig · 01/12/2023 09:46

Lovely name and suitable for any age. I’d put James on the BC because my adult son who has a formal and diminutive likes the separation too.

SingingSands · 01/12/2023 10:34

Four James' in my family who go by the following names:

Big Jamie
Wee Jamie
Jim
The Other Jim 😆

James is a family name on my father's side, and it's a big family!

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 01/12/2023 11:03

I prefer it to James and think it can be a standalone name, it’s not even shorter than James. I don’t think it would sound babyish on an adult. I would just go with it.

Aquamarine1029 · 01/12/2023 11:05

I love Jamie as a nn. You could go with Jameson instead of James if you wanted something different.

Naptrappedmummy · 01/12/2023 11:06

I like it!
