Need some help with names for my next, and definitely last, child. Don't know the sex so suggestions for both are welcome (although I am struggling a bit more with boys on account of already using my favourites).

I'm not hugely particular about the names needing to 'match' but it'd be great if they went nicely with the names of my current boys as mentioned above in the title.

Thanks in advance!

Jamima

FayCarew · 04/04/2024 10:59

Is Jamima a typo of Jemima? Jemima is nice but I wouldn't know how to say Jamima.

Rhuaridh

Unfortunately female Scottish names aren't too nice.

Just a wee note re Gaelic spellings:

Mairi (prn Marry) not Mhairi. The latter looks pretty but is the vocative case of Mairi. So you'd be calling a child 'Hey Mairi'.

Alasdair is the usual version.

Ruairidh follows Gaelic spelling conventions. (A slender vowel - that is, an 'e' or an 'i', on either side of a consonant or consonant cluster. )

For a boy how about Charles Uriah James.

Known as CU Jimmy.

😉

ThomasinaLivesHere · 04/04/2024 20:30

Ruairidh or Fergus?

Mungo was my first thought. Also..

Murray

Morag for a girl! Beautiful, classy and strong.

FayCarew · 04/04/2024 20:33

@nameXname , so the name Mhairi is not right? I only know one and she says it as 'var-y', var rhyming with far.
Is that wrong?

I've only heard Mhairi Black said as Ma-ry (ma like in Ma & Pa) or Marie.
I'm confused.

@CoddledAsAMommet , I like Mungo and Morag

Murdo

Catriona

ThomasinaLivesHere · 04/04/2024 21:37

@FayCarew The pronunciation is right but a Gaelic person’s name wouldn’t be Mhairi. It would just change to that when using vocative case. It seems strange for English speakers that your name and its pronunciation would be different depending on case but that’s how it is.
It exists in Latin too, hence the famous line is “et tu Brute” not Brutus, his name.

MarmiteyCrumpets · 04/04/2024 21:51

Hamish or Morag

Alistair, Lochlan and Finn

Love this combination. The one syllable really completes them and they sound like siblings.

I thought Guy for some reason…

Girl: Alistair, Lachlan and Orla.

Edited

Mhairi is the vocative case of Mairi. Mairi is the nominative case.
